17. Brian Roberts.

CHB, here's ya boy. Whats the difference between and ordinary record and an extraordinary record??? ...that little bit extra!! Between West and Roberts, there's a close comparison in contested opponents and accolades gained, but Roberts covers an extra base through victories.. The war horse Roberts stacked up against all, in many divisions over many years and beat most along the first 3/4. Progressing slowly to 10 rounders, Roberts made no short roads to excuses. Fighting regularly against seasoned men at a time of boxing depth, it little wonder the great experience carried him through to the next generation. Winning both the Australian bantam (from Jim West) and S/Bantam crowns, as well challenging the Aust Featherweight crown, along with 4 attempts at 3 Commonwealth Crowns- this bloke deserves plenty of respect.
Fighting Jeff Malcom in his own early days and Renato Cornett, Craig Trotter, Lester Ellis and Wilf Gentzen at the end makes a pretty amazing connection.

Best assett. Courage. Classic Boxer. Stamina.
Worst assett.

Best win. Jeff Malcolm. Big Jim West. Paul Ferreri.
Best Loss. Azumah Nelson. Lester Ellis.

16 Gary Cowburn.

Back to the Classics. A tough one to find the right placement for different reasons. The career of Gary Cowburn was that of 7 years at the close of the Golden era again. From the start of his Pro Career being pitted against experienced fighters, the Cowburn name was soon a household name with folks who wanted another superstar Aboriginal. Elley Bennett and Bobby Sinn had retired and Cowburn was flying the flag early on. The TKO stoppage of George Flemming in his 5th paid fight hoisted his name high until the bettering of Italian favourite, Aldo Pravisani over the full 12 rounds gave Cowburn legend status as a novice. Cowburns legacy rests primarily on the two victories over Legend Georgie Barnes and a return victory over Georgie Bracken. The tales of those victories will be highlighted in the Fist mag in June when Gary Cowburn is remembered. As with others who I hope to cover for the magazine, I'll leave the details short in this passage.

Best assett. Hand speed. Reach. Crafty fighter.
Worst assett. Management.

Best win. George Barnes. George Flemming.
Best loss. Ralph Dupas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

15. Grahame 'Porky' Brooke

Porky is another who seemed to have the World at his feet. Tested against former Champs from the beginning and dismantling all with ease and grace. The clever boxing Brooke was to continue belting opponents until the former World Champ, Claude Noel, placed his Commonwealth Lightweight Title on the line. A victory over Barry Michael had given Melbourne fans a taste of Noel's ability and Brooke was in for a long night if he was to celebrate his 21st Birthday with a belated gift. Brooke took the cake and trophy also whilst Noel retired from the game. Immediately Jack Rennie started negotiating with Edwin Rosario for a shot at his WBC Lightweight Crown. This failed to eventuate as Rennie signed Brooke for an encounter with the prime Barry Michael and lost the Commonwealth Crown in the process. From those who witnessedd Brooke fight, he was the next best thing to Lionel Rose at the time. Perhaps Jack Rennie saw his second coming and raced him a little to fast into the World scene?? Either way, Porky Brooke was out of luck soon after a second shot at the Commonwealth crown and Retired at the age of 23.
Have I rated him too high?? I don't think so. The talent was there, but the timing wasn't.

Best assett. Boxing Ability.
Worst assett. Chin

Best win. Claude Noel. Langton Tinago.
Best loss. Barry Michael.

14. Anthony Mundine.

I'd prefer to reserve any judgement until his career is over. Mind you, it's anyone's guessing what may happen in the next 18 months.

Good to see my friend Porky Brooke in there. A great boxer and a greater human being. Porky would go close to the top 50 Aussie fighters, if not get a run.

Yes Kevin Kelly was unfortunate v Reid. The Pyatt "L" was a disgrace.

Good mention on Porky Flamengo. He was so talented. I sparred him over at Jack Rennies whilst training to fight Cass. He was 14 but could hold his own with anyone.

13 Merv 'Darkie' Blandon

By the age of 23, Darkie had been involved in a reported 75+ bouts and remains undefeated via the KO route. His true record is believed to be 100+ bouts and growing. Deafeating Billy McAllister, former Aussie Bantam legend, inside his first recorded year remains Darcy-esque in performace. McAllister was the former Fly and Bantam Champ, a tough experienced campaigner without a backward step. Meeting Pat Craig for the Bantam crown was only to leave Craig in a mess for a long time to come. Blandon had taken the Bantam Crown, and taken Pats chin with him, as he was never in the same condition. A few battles with flashy Philipino Star Frisco kept the Aboriginal active until Merv vacated the Bantam crown enroute to the Feather division. Joe Hall gave little resistence over 15 rounds as Blandon captured the Feather Title from the light punching champion. With 3 defences of the Feather Crown, Blandon retired due to ill health.

Best assett. Durability. Stanima.
Worst assett.... Ill health. Hands.

Best win. Mickey Miller. Billy McAllister
Best loss. Mickey Miller.

12. George Bracken.

For a bloke who hated violence, he sure created some great spectacles. Making an impact was not for George to gloat about. He was Boxing for a few bucks and doing well until he fell into the same trap as many other... That trap was Colin Clarke's right hand.. TWICE. Kid Young, former Feather Champ, guided Bracken into safer ground and the Vic crown against another Clarke victum, renowned artist Brian Membrey. With a sound victory and confidence back Bracken climbed the ladder with important wins over stars like Americo Agostini, Russell Sands and Johnny Wheeler. This series of wins was to set up George with Ronald Krogh for the vacant L/W Crown. After 2 Rounds Bracken was the King.. Enter Max Carlos into the mix and a nemesis was born. Carlos eneded Bracken's 6 month reign and the pair were on the road to an epic trilogy that kept the game bouyant as 1960 drew closer. Stadiums Ltd was far from it's glory, yet Bracken vs Carlos is spoken of by the old farts who entered the West Melbourne Stadium for the series of wars. A young Lionel Rose and Johnny Famechon were also inspired by these two legends as the packed Stadium was treated to the carnage as Carlos retired with a 2-1 leed. Bracken tackled Isreali David Oved for the vacant Crown in what Oved still claims to be a total 'stinker' in the result. Thats the fight game and something has to stink. Defending once and losing twice more to Aldo Pravisani and a win and a loss to Gary Cowburn closed out Bracken's career. He's been a staunch advocate for every Aboriginal cause over the last 50 years and still busts his guts in the same fashion. Legend.

Best assett. Power shots.
Worst assett.

Best win. Johnny Van Rensburg. Max Carlos.
Best loss. Colin Clarke. Max Carlos.

11. Bobby Sinn.

This little man stood tall amongst giants. For a minature like Sinn to constantly battle top tier men with no resistence other than attack, it clearly a deserved place to have Bobby. Former, Future and Current champs all had their work cut out when in the ring with Sinn. Best remebered for scaring the shit out of 'Silent' Bill and Carruthers at Sydney Stadium in '54 with 9000 screaming fans going mental at the decision. Tony *cough* Nobbs wrote a nice article about Sinn in last Septembers Fist mag.. Order a back issue and check it out.. Bobby Sinn has been inducted into everything possible and remains one of the most remarkable small men this country has produced.

Best assett. Will. Courage. Intensity.
Worst assett. Height.

Best win. Carruthers???? Young Regan. Gianni Zuddas.
Best Loss. Jean Pierre Cossemyns. Peter Keenan
