Default A champion to fight 12 times in on year?

Hypothetical question!

Hi all, wanted to post a simple yet intriguing question, could a champion who has the right backers i.e. promoters and TV companies fight say 12 times in one year? This is a purely hypothetical question but I just wanted to know how feasible it would be. Pick a champion in any weight class, who holds a belt per say, the fighter has to be at least a dominant figure in his division for it to work. Now of course we have to take out any injuries, and the fact they could lose and I understand you would not be able to take the best available opponent every time but how feasible would it be for a well known fighter to fight so often? The real important factor would be that the fighter wants to fight this regularly regardless of the fact he wonít be getting the biggest pay days for every fight he takes.

Iíll shall pick Vitali Klitshcko, as he is fairly active already and a dominant fighter in his division.

Now to do this, we need to make as realistic as possible so it has to be a fighter in the official rankings of the belt that the fighter holds.

May 29th A. Sosnowski 45-2-1 WBC Germany (13th ranked)
6 weeks
July 10th M. Quezada 30-4 WBC USA (9TH ranked)
5weeks
Aug 14th N. Valuev 50-2 WBC Germany (3rd ranked)
4 weeks
Sept 11th D. Rossy 27-2 WBC USA (7th ranked)
4 weeks
Oct 9th R. Austin 29-4-4 WBC USA (mandatory)
8 Weeks
Dec 4th D. Haye 25-1 WBC, WBA UK (Other champion)

I havent done further as things can change easily in the rankings. Whilst Vitali isnt taking on the best very often, there are still matchups that can interest people especially if certain fights are free tv.

Yeah i know J. Louis has the record for like 7 in one year for heavyweight, didnt H. Armstrong have loads aswell?

It be interesting to see it in the modern game, of course not all the fighters on the list are top 10 but in reality if he were to fight he has to take on guys in the rankings or possibly another champion. I kno some will argue that some of the fights are pointless, which i agree with BUT if a fighter is able to fight so often it could be interesting.

It would be nice to to institute some kind of mandatory fighting schedule by a champion. He must at least fight every other month. I think once a month is probably pushing it. Injuries tv schedules also play a huge part now.

Rocky Marciano won 13 or 14 fights in a year if I'm not mistaken.

Not possible today.

Yeah you would have to take out injuries and the fact they could lose. It just when i somtimes look throught the calender i see certain things that stand out in my mind for example Tyson fought Seldon then Holyfield in the space of 2 months, vitali did it with Arreloa and Johnson.

I think if you had a fighter good enough, and wanted to do it...it can be possible.

Not possible unless he doesn't care if the fights are televised. TV needs to be arranged too far in advance.

fighting a lot is a good way for a champion to fight guys before they are seasoned. Tyson was fighting so much in 1987, that he probably fought guys who didn't have as much time to train. He fought Biggs before Biggs had time to develop.

It's really unlikely, especially with a HW champion since usually they make more money and have less reason to fight so often.

Sugar Ray Robinson was fighting a dozen times per year while being the champion, most of the bouts being non-title. Among more modern fighters, James Toney and Julio Cesar Chavez were very active as fighters even while champions. Like Ray, they fought in a lot of non-title bouts while being world champs. Toney had 7 fights in 1993, 2 of them being title bouts. Chavez had some years where he fought six times.

Not really possible in the modern TV age.

Edgar Sosa, up until he lost the title recently, was probably the most active champion, but even he only stretched to 5 or 6 defences a year.
