Default British Fighters that could get a World Title fight in 2010 Part 2

Following on from yesterdays thread, this is a look at all of the fighters we have with a shot at a world title this year.

Part 1 - [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

Middleweight

Matthew Macklin - IBF No.5. WBC No.5, WBO No.7, WBA No.9

Macklin is a tricky one. He knocks out well the world ranked Amin Asikainen in 1 round, then has a keep busy fight to get the rounds in against a decent opponent. At this point were looking good. He has a February fight with the Dangerous WBO Number 2 Dmitri Priog, which got put back to April, and then cancelled (Priog pulls out stating that he is being messed around doesn't believe Macklinís team wants the fight) The next potential opponent is named as the equally dangerous Khoren Gevor, but then that fight falls through. Currently he has no fight scheduled.

There are plenty of rumours that Macklin is going to split from his promotional team (The Hattonís) so itís really up in the air what he does next. He has vacated the European title; a re-match with Jamie Moore which would have been a big fight has lost its spark due to Mooreís loss and impending retirement. Fights with other domestic rivals Lee, Duddy and Barker seem no closer.

No doubt if he went ahead with fights against Priog or Gevor and won, he would be a mandatory for one of the belts. However both of these would be tough fights and are far better than anyone Macklin has faced before. The cynics among us would suggest that Macklin has dropped his title to avoid fighters like Priog and Gevor, waiting for a World Title fight against weak champions Felix Strum (WBA) and Sebastian Sylvester (IBF) or a shot at a vacant title if Kelly Pavlik (WBC/WBO) or challenger Sergio Martinez move weight Divisions.

In truth we need to see what Macklinís next move is in terms of both opponent and promoter before we can fully predict his World Title chances in 2010. Don't be shocked if his domestic rivals in Lee, Duddy or Barker beat him to it.

Chances of a Title fight in 2010 - 30%
Chances of winning - 50%

Light Middleweight

Ryan Rhodes - WBC No.3, IBF No.5

EBU Champion Ryan Rhodes is in a good position. He is coming of a career best win against the highly respected Jamie Moore. he has signed a 3 fight deal with Hatton Promotions, who seem to be doing a very good job at getting title fights. They are also in need of a lead fighter with Macklin leaving, and Ryan Rhodes in going for a world title could be a big ticket seller in Sheffield where they have an Arena with a 12,000 capacity. Rhodes has a EBU title defence scheduled for May.

He is ranked highly by two belts, and fighters ahead of him are focussing elsewhere. The divisionís top fighter Sergio Martinez (WBC) is moving up to fight champion Kelly Pavlik, and if he wins its likely he would stay there, Leaving the title vacant, and with the number 1 ranked Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr moving to up, and number 2 ranked Kermit Cintron involved in an extremely tough fight against Paul Williams in May, Rhodes could be in line for a vacant title shot. If Martinez looses, anythign could happen.

The IBF Title (Cory Spinks) is also a complicated one. Itís being chased and passed around in title fights and eliminators with 4 other Americans (Latimore, Phillips, Powell, Bundrage). All have finished in boring Split Decisions and draws. All 5 would be winnable fights for Rhodes, with Spinks perhaps being the best of the bunch, however he is well past his best, fighting more on reputation. Thereís rumours he won't be able to make 154lbs again, which means Rhodes could end up with a shot.

If Hatton promotions matchmaker can get EBU title shots for Scott Lawton, they should be able to get at least an eliminator of vacant title fight in Sheffield before 2010 is out. The only thing not in Rhodes favour is his age, and you got to think if itís not going to happen for him now, then it will more than likely be never.

Chances of a Title fight in 2010 - 60%
Chances of winning - 40%

Welterweight

Kell Brook - WBO No.2

Unbeaten British Champion Kell Brook is on a very solid run. He is a prospect highly rated by all, and if he continues to move in the right direction, he will become a legit World Champion. The problem for Kell is he is in the best division in Boxing, with stars like Floyd Mayweather, Andre Berto (WBC), Shane Mosley (WBA) and of course Manny Pacquiao (WBO). Now it would be crazy to think promoter Frank ****** would put Kell in with any of those, or the contenders like Clottey and Collazo.

You cannot see Pacquiao defending his title anytime soon, but itís unlikely the WBO will strip the biggest name in Boxing. Expect Brook to get nominated for and "interim" title fight before the year is out. This could be against undefeated fighters like Antonion Donaire and Saul Alvarez, but could also be against domestic rival Michael Jennings, who Brook has been scheduled to fight a few times. Winning this could see Brook award the WBO belt when Pacquiao moves on, not the ideal way but Frank ****** has done it with many fighters before.

There is a possibility of ****** working his magic and getting Jan Zaveck (IBF) or Vysacheslav Senchenko (WBA regular) in the ring, but even if Brook goes the interim route, you get the feeling his skill and potential will lead him to true World titles eventually.

Chances of a Title fight in 2010 - 40%
Chances of winning - 60%

Matthew Hatton - WBA No.14 (Rankings done before Euro win)

If you mentioned his name for World Titles 2 years ago you would be laughed at, in fact itís this will still get laughed at now. But Magic Matthew has been on a streak recently. He has wins over Ben Tackie and Ted Bami, picked up a draw against Louvermore N'Dou and won the EBU title against Gianluca Branco. There 4 good results, but looking closer all 4 were fighting at a higher weight, and were well past the prime.

Still, after picking up the EBU title, he will get a WBC ranking, and his WBA Ranking will improve. Do not be shocked if his big brother puts in a decent offer to attract Vysacheslav Senchenko (WBA regular) to Manchester. The Ukrainians would see it as an easy pay day for an undefeated fighter, and the Hattonís would see it as the big chance for Matthew before he calls it quite like his Brother. Thereís also a potential showdown with Junior Witter to look forward to, so we would get to see that fight after all..................sort off.

Chances of a Title fight in 2010 - 15%
Chances of winning - 5%

Light Welterweight

Ajose Olusegun - WBC No.2

Ajose has been highly ranked by the WBC for over 3 years now, despite never really fighting anyone of note until last weekend. He defeated Colin Lynnes, the former EBU Champion in impressive fashion, however Lynnes looks well past his best and weight drained. He took the fight with Lynnes after a WBC eliminator with Romanian Ionut Dan Ion fell through. It would take a KO victory for Ajose to get the decision in Romania, hopefully the fight can get re-arranged in the UK, or even Nigeria where Ajose is originally from.

If he does come through it, next up would be the WBC and IBF champion Devon Alexander. He is a real world class talent, and with HBO backing him, itís more likely he would vacate to take a bigger money fight. If he was to fight Alexander, it would almost certainly be in the US, and the odds would be stacked against Ajose.

Itís unlikely the other alphabets will take much notice of Ajose, and itís unlikely any champion would risk it with him for little reward. 2010 could be pushing it, but if he keeps on winning, he will get a WBC title fight eventually.

Chances of a Title fight in 2010 - 20%
Chances of winning - 20%

Paul McCloskey - WBC No.6

McCloskey burst onto the scene last year when he stepped in to replace Olegusen in a British Title fight. He stopped Lynnes in a sensational performance and has looked pretty good ever since, picking up the EBU title.

He certainly would not be picked as an opponent by any of the world champions due to his tricky style and power. He is building up a following and if he continues to defend his EBU title his WBC ranking will improve.

For me theres two options. Go to the states, build up a name for yourself there using the Irish roots in cities like New York and Boston, or go for the Olegusen fight, which would be a WBC eliminator. Both would likely not lead to a world title fight before the end of the year.

Chances of a Title fight in 2010 - 15%
Chances of winning - 25%

Very optimistic with the percentages, especially Matthew Hatton's chances of winning the title

Rhodes needs a fight.

It's been 6 months and even Moore has fought since, coming off a heavy loss.

Rhodes, as far as I'm aware has nothing lined up.

He cant afford any ring rust at this point in his career, it's last chance.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe he has a defence of his Euro title lined up sometime in May.

Grant1,
Just to clarify, Rhodes will be defending his Euro title on 21st May in Sheffield.
He will feature at least twice more in 2010.
