I hate Kizaemon Saiga as well. Looks like a fucking girl.

I agree, I can't see a bad fight in it. Uematsu should get to the final, but I think the winner will be whoever wins between Ishikawa and Yamato in that semi (assuming they get there but I reckon they will). I'm backing Yamato to win that, even though I think Ishikawa is the fave. I like the Muay Thai style and Yamato has power, which is always an equaliser. Yamato vs Yuki will be an excellent fight imo and should end in a KO. Yamato FTW!!!!!

Thought I'd bump this seeing as a week ago the first 63kg Champ was crowned. And my man Tetsuya Yamato won the tournament, winning all his fights by KO. The Final match was fucking awesome:

Yamato looked in trouble there, but his power and relentless pressure pulled him through at the end. He's a very exciting fighter and I hope to see him in action again soon; he's one of my new favourite fighters.

Overall a great event as well. Lots of KO's, from the 63kg guys anyway. I really like this 63kg weightclass; it has a lot of talented and exciting fighters. I'd really recommend checking out all the fights from the tournament.

I think you could consider it MMA but its just a mix of striking arts. It's 50% MMA.

Personally, I like the Grand Prixs.

I saw him fight many times back in the day, they used to show K1 on ESPN sometimes.

First fight I saw was Hoost vs. Sefo for the championship. Michael Jordan was watching in the crowd and the announcer at the time mentioned Hoost as the MJ of the sport. And he was.

Yeah BC, McDonald was always on the Casino circuit back in the day with his dangling trunks.

Here are my thoughts on that last event...finally!

Yoshimichi Matsumoto was, as predicted, true to the "Thriller" moniker yet again (both in victory in the quarterfinal, and - less flatteringly - in his knockout defeat in the semifinal). The one with Uematsu was an absolute classic. As brutally and decisively as he was put out cold with that high kick, there is no shame in a loss to Yuta Kubo. It would have been a tough out for even the Cinderella man even if both were fresh; as it is, Matsumoto was ragged from having just gone through a war with Uematsu, and Kubo had had what amounted to a no-sweat warm-up sparring session in his own quarterfinal.

Matsumoto is becoming one of my favorite fighters in not only K1 but all of combat sports, and might be my favorite southpaw period right now.

Kraus is a master pressurer/grinder, but what else is new?

Yamato-Kubo...wow. What an amazing final, and we can only hope there's a rematch.

Almost best of all, Kizaeman Saiga got knocked off his high smiley horse!

What a great card all around. The only dull spots were Dida-Nagashima and Miyata-Watanabe and even those were watchable.

I like the 63kg tournament. the lighter weights usually have the fast paced/high skill action that keeps the thrills going. ill admit I dont know these guys but I will keep watching as long as they compete.

I watched the tourney on youtube and had to find each fight individually. I wish I had hd net but with COX cable it is not available. Damn!!

ok so what about the final 16 max tourney coming up? who you got?

I still have not heard if either andy souwer, buakaw, petrosyan will be in the max final.

I read that it would be in September.

K-1 have done everything a different way this year, splitting the MAX Final 16 into two events. Three fighters are already through; Kraus, Sato and Nagashima. Souwer and Petrosyan are already booked from what I've read. As for Buakaw, no one really knows but he has been having problems with K-1. He may be replaced by another Thai fighter in Pajonsuk I've heard. They haven't finalised the line up or even announced the September event yet to my knowledge.

As for the MAX GP, it's hard to pick against Petrosyan. He has looked unbeatable and hasn't lost in 3 years or so. I'd like to see him fight Buakaw though as they drew the first bout. Buakaw maybe the only one who can beat him at the moment.

Regardless, I'll be rooting for Souwer to win his third MAX GP title!!

Sato's on a bit of a roll this summer and has been keeping himself sharp.

He looked good against Yamamoto at the last K1 event.

Then just over a week ago at Krush 9, he defeatd Yuji Nashiro (the younger brother of former boxing champion Nobuo Nashiro). Yuji was an accomplished kickboxing amateur who is 2-1 in K1 (with the loss to Nagashima) and 18-0 with 18 knockouts in MMA. Once he got warmed up, Sato dominated.

Now, do these performances make me favor Sato over a field as deep as this -70kg Final Eight is shaping up to be? No, but they do have me very excited to see how he does.

The southpaw jab does get through to him a bit, and due to his style of coming forward he does take a lot of outside kicks to the lead leg, but overall Sato has one of the better defenses among active kickboxers IMO. He's also just an absolute pest with his pressure, right knees, and leg/arm combos. His body type is almost ideal for the sport as well.
