De La Hoya probably has a better chin than Hearns. Hearns was much busier outside with the jab and relied on that to control opponents from long range. De La Hoya lacked upperbody and head movement at welterweight. Quartey caught De La Hoya with many jabs, and his right hand hit the target often as well.
De La Hoya has better combinations than Hearns, and no doubt about it in my opinion. Especially when it comes to variety. It would not be an easy fight for Hearns, but he'd win a decision. |

Hearns by TKO - 9
De La Hoya's gonna have to win with his jab, which isn't going to bother Tommy a great deal. He doesn't have the hammer to keep Hearns honest, or the unorthodox style like a Barkley to get surprised with. De La Hoya's too conditioned to fight a specific way - a way that Tommy won't be heavily troubled by. Oscar's whiskers will keep him in there a while.... but too much punch and talent on Tommy's end for DLH to overcome. |

DLH will stop him in 1 out of 3 bouts. Hearns jab and movement is too good. Plus I wouldnt' be suprised if his power and body shots discouraged him big time.

I would go as far to say if anyone thinks Hearns has a better chin than De La Hoya, your either a Hearns nuthugger or a De La Hoya hater.
De La Hoya has been stopped once in his entire career, and has got a reputation as having a "good chin". Apart from being dropped against Quartey and stopped against Hopkins he's never looked in serious trouble. However, I do concede De La Hoya was dropped early at 130lbs by two opponents. I'm not sure Hearns could have survived Mosley's bombs which De La Hoya took when they first fought. |
