Randy Turpin earnt $207 000 for the Robinson rematch. Which equates to about 3million in todays money. I think he still ended up penniless though

I wouldn't say that he ended up in poverty but he certainly had money troubles which came from bad investments and being robbed by his manager.

We need TurpinR to confirm though...

Who is TurpinR?
Just copied this form his bio on his website

Following his retirement it became clear that Randy's finances had been less than well managed. Numerous failed business ventures including a hotel and holiday camp saw him fall heavily in debt. For money Randy fought as a wrestler at 25 a bout. He also had a job working in a scrapyard, which was owned by former manager George Middleton. In 1962 the Inland Revenue claimed 17,126 on his boxing earnings, Randy could not pay and was declared bankrupt. He made a brief return to the ring to score knockout victory over Eddie Marcano and Charles Seguna, before troubles with his eyesight put an end to his career for good.

With many troubles in his life Randy committed suicide on May 17 1966, aged just 37.

Get him on the case!!! I suspect after the Robinson fight he must have earned a fair bit as his stock will have risen he was paid $28 000 for the first Robinson fight then $207 000 for the rematch so his career earnings in modern day terms must be pushing 5-10 million a 1950's pound is worth 20.44 today approx

randy's tale is the classic rags to riches to rags story.he did indeed end up penniless, the final straw being a letter from the inland revenue that pushed him over the edge.
its a toss up between his manager george middleton and promoter jack solomons as to who gets the blame for fleecing him most.solomons usually wins and randy was not very keen on londoners.

What did Solomons do to him obviously he might have fleeced Turpin but i thought that Solomons did pretty well in gettin Robinson to fight over here and to match Turpin against him.

Robinson was on tour fighting all over Europe at the time. I don't think it would have been that hard to get him to come to the UK for one of the fights.

I hate to say what if BUT WHAT IF Turpin hadn't traded with Robinson in their rematch after the cut and had eeked out a points decision or a stoppage? How much higher regard would we hold Turpin would Robinson still be heldin such high regard?

Tricky one but the fight was stopped in the 10th. Robinson was badly cut but another 5 rounds is a long time to eek out a decision, Robinson went for the stoppage on got it. Neither fighter was anywhere near far enough ahead on the cards to coast the last 5 rounds.

If Turpin had won the rematch then it would have shown the first win was more than a case of Robinson being jaded after a busy European tour (which is a common opinion) as it was, even though it was a great win, they'll always be that "charge" against it from a lot of quarters even though the 2nd fight showed that Turpin was good enough to hang and compete with Robinson.

turpin went bankrupt, and lost it all. old family and freinds used to say he ended up boxing on little fairs for hardly nothing. shame really.
