Default Jimmy Wilde

Was he really THAT good first recognised flyweight champion of the world. I understand he was a hard puncher knocking out guys 50lbs heavier than himself in booth fights but is he overrated?

He was the first world champion in a newly formed division. During this time the Far Eastern countries Phillipines Japan etc (where most good little men come from today) did not compete in world boxing at a high level.

We would not consider a British flyweight that beat the best of Europe and USA as the best in the world necassarily.

Incidentally though supposedly past his prime the first Asian fighter he ran into Pancho Villa knocked him out into permanent retirement.

I do not claim to be an expert I am just interested in peoples opinions and would gladly be educated on his merits and achievements

Yes, he was shit hot.

He was past prime coming off a year layoff (following a loss to ATG Bantam Pete Herman) in his loss to Villa; still puts up a good showing, easily viewable.

Resume isn't stacked, but knowledge of the opponents of that time isn't stacked either; Tancy Lee was a good win, no doubt.

I'd pick Benny Lynch to beat him at the weight. I did a pretty big resume analysis before; can't be arsed to pull it out again.

I came to the conclusion that whilst his resume wasn't the best, his dominance and attributes pull him into the 50-60 mark alltime. I rate Pancho Villa over him P4P personally (40-45 mark)

Against a bigger opponent

Against Villa, where I personally think both fighters look quality and not at all 'technically inferior'.

Wildes first loss (later avenged) against Tancy Lee.

Wins over Joe Lynch are clearly the most impressive; Lynch is arguably a lock for the top ten Bantamweights of all time. The ever reliable Cyber Boxing Zone has this to say about him, which is a far more succint analysis than I could provide:

Lynch was an outstanding bantamweight in a period of outstanding bantams; He was tall for his weight which made him look skinny and frail; His best punching combination was a stiff left jab followed by one of the best rights in the business; He could take the fight to his man and when attacked was game and held up well; Lynch was never knocked out or stopped; In a career of nearly 160 bouts, Lynch lost only 13 official contests; During his career, Joe won the Bantamweight Championship of The World.

As I say, that's the same conclusion I came too; when I first got into boxing, I was always hearing about Wilde. He took on a nearly mythical status what with being placed in most peoples top 10 all time P4P lists.

But I've done a fair bit of research into him now; have found about five or six credible opponents, but again, that's due to the lack of info more than anything. The wins I can attain for are impressive; impressive enough for him to rank in my top 5 at Flyweight, and somewhere around the 50-60 mark P4P.

He looks impressive enough against Villa that I can imagine him being a very bad prospect head to head for most ATG Flys when he was in his prime; but I don't go too overboard.

Jim Driscoll is the more impressive British fighter IMO; resume wise and aesthetically.

Not at all. His record is better than people give it credit for and he still looks relatively impressive on film for a fighter of that era. He's a flyweight not a featherweight, so thats probably half of where you might be going wrong.

Hadn't realised i said feather woops. Ashley ***ton could batter every domestic fly a few times over and win the european title and we still would not consider him anywhere near world contention

He seems a bit lead right hand happy...but I love the double jab, certainly a classy enough operator
