I think it's because Berrio is not a household name (A champion non the least, that's why he has the biggest purse.. sorry for stating the obvious).

Bute would fight Lacy or Froch and he would get a better purse IMO.

According to an article in the Romanian press, Bute gets, according to IBF rules, 25% of the purse, which is 600.000 dollars...(US or CAD??) i.e. 150k.

Yes, I know about the percentages, but thank you anyway. What I meant was that the combined purse is very low for a title fight at 168. Especially if you take into consideration that Berrio is fighting under Sauerland, but I guess they have already read the writing on the wall like most of us and don't want to waste their money on a fighter that don't stand much of a chance.

Bute will have no problems schooling this paper champ. Berrio is just a crude slugger who is so far behind the other titlists at the weight it's not even funny. Bute KO 9.

It's not just that...the Americans aren't showing the fight and the Romanians aren't either! So there is less TV money...also, Berrio is Columbian...not German or even Russian ...so less interest.

You say that he is raw and all that...sure, you're right, but when he tags you, you feel it...

Bute Leitartikel

15/10/2007 11:20Lucian Bute, un adepte d'Occupation doubleDaniel Cloutier
Le Journal de MontréalBoxe [Only registered and activated users can see links.

Ils me font tellement plaisir...»

Bute is, according to his trainer, Stephane Larouche, an obsessive trainer and a perfectionist:

"Never have I trained so hard for a fight and never have I payed so much attention when studying and analysing the style of an opponent like this time around".

"When I will enter the ring on Friday, I will be able to say that I have done all that was humanly possible to be perfectly prepared and to overcome this challenge." - Lucian Bute

Pressure fighter who plods forward deliberately throwing hooks and uppercuts. Shaky chin. Kisses opponents on forehead.

My vcash is on Bute outboxing him for 12 rounds, maybe getting a TKO somewhere along the line if he lands a good punch to the shaky chin. He'll probably be vulnerable to Bute's body jab. Bute has superior hand speed.

From Pechea to Montreal

In 1996, the trainer Octavian Tabara was pointing towards a lanky youth and saying: "Watch out for him! He will be as great as Teofilo Stevenson!"

Tabara is recounting: “Lucian started boxing in 1994, when together with Nicu Comanici, the director of the Dunarea Club, I started a preselection campaign through the schools of Galati county. In Pechea, we heard of a PE teacher, Felix Paun, who had boxed and who wanted to start a club. We brought him two punching bags, a couple of pairs of gloves and twice a week we would go to give him a hand. From the Pechea school, Bute arose. We immediately saw he was special and we took him to Galati. On the 10th of November we signed him up for the Dunarea (Danube) Club, and I took him to live with my family. I treated him as one of my own kids. He is the most intelligent boxer I have ever trained."

"In 1997, Bute was discovered to be suffering from chronic, allergic and evolving vertebral dimorphism. The doctors cited it as a limiting factor to boxing performance. In other words I was told to let him go." However, Tabara believed in Lucian's flair and stuck to him. Ignoring the doctors' adivice, he took Lucian through hospitals and payed for his treatment until he was cured.

Tabara and Bute - the early days:

In the shadow of the Simion brothers...

In 1998, Lucian won the bronze medal in the Buenos Aires Junior World Championships and in 1999, bronze at the Houston Senior World Championships...no one thought he could be budged from the Romanian Olympic Team. Sydney was just around the corner, but his Olympic dream of competing at 67 kg was shattered when Dorel Simion, World Champion (1997) and European Champion (199 joined the team at 63.5 kg. An eliminator was arranged between the two - Dorel got the judges' nod. "But Lucian had won!", Tabara recounts. "It was the wrong decision." Bute lost his place in the team; he couldn't even try his luck at 71kg where Marian Simion was no. 1. These were some very frustrating years for Lucian.

It wasn't until 2003 when he got the chance to compete in a major competition - The World Championships in Bangkok. However, he was beaten just before the medals by Golovkin, who became Champion. "Bute was being robbed by the judges so he risked everything towards the end of the fight. He was caught out and KO'ed - it was the end of his amateur career."

It was in Bangkok that his current trainer, Stephane Larouche, proposed him to become a pro. And now, Lucian Bute will finally get his chance to shine.

(I apologise for my stodgy translation...)
