Default Rafael Marquez next for Vic

Sounds like Vasquez will retire and Vic will be next for Marquez....

Rafael Marquez Pummels Vazquez - Darchinyan next

from the Daily Contributor on-line
23 May 2010 - posted by Joannes

Rafael Marquez and Israel Vazquez’s rivalry is back at square one and it looks like that is how their epic four-fight battle will end.

Marquez demolished Vazquez in three rounds to win the fourth matchetween the two fighters, evening their four-bout rivalry and pushing fans to ask for a fifth fight.

Marquez took the upper hand in the first round by opening up a deep and long cut the size of Vazquez’s left eyelid, forcing the former 122-pound champion to see through one eye. Vazquez survived the first round but was thoroughly dominated in the second round, no thanks to the enormous cut just above his left eye. A wayward head butt opened a cut in Vazquez’s right eye early in the third round, forcing the 32-year-old Mexican warrior to fight almost blind.

A combination from Marquez knocked Vazquez down, although he was able to beat the count, it was only a matter of time before the fateful end came. With his opponent on the defensive, Marquez attacked Vazquez relentlessly, forcing referee Raul Caiz Jr. to stop the fight at the 1:33 mark of the third round.

After the fight, Vazquez was graceful in defeat, giving credit to Marquez and admitting that the first cut and the blood that came with it “really affected” him. Both fighters left a window open for a fifth fight, but their handlers were clear that the rivalry would end at four bouts, with Vazquez’s longtime manager saying his ward should hang his gloves.

“That’s it. His career is over,” Frank Espinoza said.

As for Marquez, his promoter, Gary Shaw, has already someone in mind as his prized fighter’s next opponent and his not surnamed Vazquez. Shaw said he is planning to pit his ward with another banger, Australia’s Vic Darchinyan, the reigning WBA and WBC super flyweight champion.

Can't believe I missed it. Risky fight for Vic. Good on him though

Not sure if Vic can carry up his power up to Marquez's weight. Vic doesn't look as powerful at 118 let alone 122. Not a good fight for him.

time wil tell, he still managed to drop barcelona with a broken hand, i think rafa will be too big, hopefully he makes a good payday from it though.
however i think vic will still be dangerous at that weight

I think Vic's recent form is better than he's been given credit for.

He's rebuilt nicely after the hard fought loss to Agbeko & has three quick wins under his belt, two of which were distance fights.

Marquez is 35, has been fighting once a year for a while now, and whilst formidable in terms of skills, size & power is not superman.

Irrespective of who the opponent is (Nonentity, Perez or Marquez) it's going to be a high risk fight given where Vic is at in his career (i.e. mid 30's himself). Vic will earn far more against Marquez than the other two so that's the one he should take.

Losing to Nonentity or Perez would be game over for Vic's career. A strong showing against Marquez (which I think Vic is more than capable of) and he can reload at bantamweight next year even in the event of a loss.

Don't write Vic off completely in the Marquez fight btw. Despite three of his last four fights going the distance the power is still there - even with a broken hand. Barcelona was very close to being stopped in the 11th & that corkscrew knockdown in the 5th was pretty spectacular.

If Marquez (who hasn't had a lot of activity lately) doesn't get it done early against Vic he could have a serious fight on his hands as it wears on.

Marquez would take this by TKO imo... that weight is too much for Vic i reckon and RM has good power, speed, combinations and a stinging body attack

Vic's camp should try to get the fight made at 122. Vic to go up one weight division, Marquez to come down one.

I don't think Marquez would have too much trouble making weight.

Bad hand or not, it was more than a head clash that had Vic in trouble

I think you're being overly dramatic in your analysis, Beaver.

Vic was hit flush a few times after which he closed up shop for a while but I don't think he was ever in any serious danger of being stopped.

I think the specific incident you're referring to was early in the 11th. Barcelona followed up hard for a minute or so thereafter and was basically spent after that point.

Barcelona was very close to being stopped himself later in the round and probably would have been without the broken hand.

Tough fight for Vic but good on him for wanting to fight the best. I'm not sure if he can carry the power to the higher weight divisions. He hit Abejko with some thunderous shots that didn't seem to phase him.

Mate i agree somewhat, your right it was at the start of the 11th rd, Vic looked to be in big trouble, i've watched it back a few times and only that Barcelona doesn't have heavier hands prevented him stopping Vic........... Vic did finish the rd strong but Barcelona was a tough little dude and after the fight he was still jumping around, whereas Vic was spent.

It was evident Vic was not he's normal self that night.
