I favor Jackson. Johnson might have had a bit better one punch power, but Jackson was better in every other area.

An interesting viewpoint. I get the idea that Jackson might have been a bit like a larger Gene Tunney.

Jackson was such a complete boxer, fast on his feet, tricky, perfectly paced his shots, very good jab, etc., I would seriously favour him to outbox Johnson...

I too would favor Jackson. Style wise Jackson was very quick and fast. He threw the type fo quick & straight punhces ( Like O'brein but with more power and range ) that would likely land on Johsnon.

The best style to defeat Jackson was an action oriented puncher. Jackson had such a fight vs Frank Slavin. Slavin was something of an early version of Jack Dempsey.

Slavin had a good amount of power, size and speed in his era. Slavin put away Kilrain much faster than Sullvian did, and crushed a very tough and scrappy Mick Dooley in 1. Sullivan could have fought Slavin. The editor of the Police Gazette, Richard Fox gave his magazine belt to Slavin when Sullivan failed to meet him.

At any rate, Jackson vs Salvain is a rare prime vs prime match. Here is the report which will shed light on Jackson's ability in the ring. Slavin was undefeated at 30-0-5 when he meet Jackson.

I completely agree with you, thanks for the link! Good to have you here, Mendoza!

Ah, btw, Mendoza, just out of curiosity, which boxing historians do you like/ respect the most and which not?

Hes the champ of Australia so he must win! Pictured is a book I found in a secondhand bookshop buried away up the back. Best $3 I ever spent!

It's close to 50-50, but Peter could probably beat Jack late.

I honestly have no clue how some of you are so sure Jackson would win. Johnson beat the better foes and imo had the power to take out Jackson. While I don't think jackson had the power to take out Johnson. I see Johnson scoring a KO.. sometime around the 16 or so.

i think it is potentially a bad style matchup 4 johnson in some ways but the length and his smartness play into his hands, if he goes past 10 or so without 2 much damage i would take johnson to adjust more and get on top.

If you think Jackson beats Johnson, how does Corbett do against the Galveston Giant?

Well, they both have "Jack" in their names. So, someone's getting Jacked up!

Updated post by me as this is a 2007 thread!

George Siler was a famous boxing referee and author. He was also the 3rd man in the ring for both, and saw them both live. In this particular debate, his opinion is very relevant. Siler was also fond of Jack Johnson.

Siler writes Peter Jackson “ Was the best black heavyweight by long odds. “ He also said Jackson hit a lot harder than Johnson.

Johnson could lose in many ways. His chin when hit flush was a bit questionable, and his work rate was on the low side. Jackson seems to have had the better chin perhaps by a small margin. The key differation between the two was activity level, and power. Jack Johnson had some close calls, draws, and decision losses. But if Johnson had Jackson’s power and activity level, I think he beats the Hart’s of boxing, and does not draw to the O’Brien, Klondike, Jeanette, etc... In addition, I think he would have KO’d many of the guys he took the distance.
