Default The Les Darcy commemoration last Satdy

The overcast skies didn't dampen the day, with the opening address from The Mayor, Peter Blackmore. Followed by the tireless Clair James from the the Les Darcy Heritage Committee. Author extraordinaire Arnod Thomas & the auther & poet Peter Fenton, who recited no less than 3 of his works on Les..
All these peole contributed to make this event & the resulting rejuvenation of the Darcy family tomb possible, along with Tony Hood, Ken Watson & several others.
A special Mention has to be made of a Mr Geoff Bible, a philantropist & former resident of Maitland whose family had a history with the Darcy's.
His financial contributions ensured that the project would never fail.

There was a painting of Les titled "The Maitland Wonder" donated by Robert McCaig went up for auction but I couldn't stay for the outcome.

I wrote this tribute & Arnold asked for a copy, which I gave him. Fortunately , with Peter Fentons recital it was not needed but & I understand he gave it to the local press.

Cheers

James Leslie Darcy 1895-1917

And they gathered at his monument, to commemorate his name

A child born in circumstance, that was not akin to fame,

A century on, they've come & gone, but still his Mark is made.

From a talent few have equaled, in sportings toughest trade.

Hammering out a living for a family deep in need

The blacksmiths anvil ringing to his power & his speed

The kid was barely in his teens but the word had quickly spread

That he was sending men much senior, back to the losers shed.

They came out from the heartland, the Americans were in town

The Clabby's & McGoorty's, the Chips & “KO” Brown

The toughest came, to sort the boy, that ruled the Aussie shore

But returned to tell their kin folk of this teenage walking war.

In a world engulfed in politics that feeds on human grief

To a poverty stricken family, it's nothing but a thief

Misguided he departed on a dream to change their life

But floundered on a culture, where such dreams were just as rife.

Stricken down with sickness, he'd seen his final dawning

A lonely life had faded & a nation was in mourning.

He may have died on foreign soil, but the Southern Cross he's under

Les Darcy is the legend that we call The Maitland Wonder.

Rodin, great stuff mate. I believe your Poem will be published in the "Maitland Mercury"...

Thats the same Maitland Mercury (Local paper) that highlighted Darcy's earliest fights 1911 & 1912. Plus every other fight report, both in the ring and with beaurocratic pro-war clowns. Your words are in good company.

For those who 'missed' the oportunity to place some $$$$ forth via purchasing a plaque or making a cash donation, and secure the restoration of the Darcy Family Vault, breath easy.. As Rodin mentions, with the help of many peoples, councils etc, and one Mr. Geoffrey C. Bible the, funds have surplussed. Now works can commence to restore one of Australia's more proud sons resting place.

For those who wished to have been there on the weekend (me included), there'll be another special day soon, when the family vaults works are complete.

Something to look forward too.
