It can be argued that given his previous achievements and experience, also given how improved Cotto has been in a lot of areas since he hooked up with Garcia...he is/was the best at 154lbs at the time Mayweather beat him. |

Castillo and Corrales are way overrated in ESB.
Corrales used his weight to advantage but he really does not have much to his arsenal. He is slow, does not even fight tall. Kostya has more pedigree than those two, whose actual pedigree is having a round robin among themselves. |

Timothy Bradley 29-0 (12 KO)
Was #1 at 140 before moving up in weight. Unified champion at 140. Beat Manny Pacquiao. Current WBO welterweight champion. Ranked #1 at Welterweight by Boxrec. Chris John 47-0-2 (22 KO) WBA super world featherweight champion. Has faced and beat Juan Manuel Marquez. Is scheduled to face Chonlatarn Piriyapinyo (44-0 (27 KO)) Has been a WBA champion for the last 8 years. Kell Brook 29-0 (19 KO) Has worked his way up to be IBF mandatory. His resume is pretty much the exact same as Canelo's. Saul Alvarez 41-0 (30 KO) WBC light middleweight world champion. Is only 22. Has a win over a faded but still a HOF worthy Shane Mosley. Ranked #2 at light middle weight by Boxrec behind fellow undefeated great Floyd Mayweather. Nathan Cleverly 24-0 (11 KO) WBO light heavy weight champion. Took the 0 off of Tony Bellew and Karo Murat. Went to Bellews backyard to defend his title. Tyson Fury 19-0 (14 KO) Rated #5 by the WBC at heavyweight. Former English, Irish, British and Commonwealth champion. Took the 0 off of Pajkic, Chisora, Nascimento and Power. Is facing Denis Boytsov in a clash where 50 men have tried 50 men have failed against these two respected warriors. There is a small list of undefeated greats, I'll list some more later. |

Sergio's last fight at 154: February of 2009
Number of Sergio's title fight victories at 154: 0 Number of former/future/current world champions he defeated officially at 154: 0 Number of former/future/current world champions he defeated there on most scorecards: 1 Cotto's first fight at 154: June of 2010, over a year after Sergio's last fight there, and after Sergio won the middleweight world title. Mayweather's win over Cotto at 154: May of 2012 Result: Sergio Martinez was the top 154-pounder on the planet, rendering Floyd less than a world-beater and more of a cherry-picker at 154. You've got to be a physics professor to even explain this thought-process. The last time Martinez had a fight at 154, that same year, Shane Mosley, Paul Williams and Celestino Caballero were in Ring's top ten p4p rankings. I hope that gives us some perspective on how time actually moves on, even when you don't want it to. |

Just face it, Floyd ducked every fighter in every weight class apart from the 43 that he faced. This seems to be the theory on this forum!!
People just list fighters that he never faced and blame Floyd. even though Cotto admitted he never called out Floyd and Shane admitted he pulled out of the fight they both get named on a daily basis as guys Floyd ducked. Pacmans record at 130 and below for me is great and his win against Cotto even at the catch weight is a great win. JMM will always have his number and vice versa no shame in that JMM really is a great fighter. Floyd has an excellent record overall but lacks the defining fight. A win over Pac/Sergio would seal his legacy. Most of Floyd's wins come against fighters that most on esb have never heard of. They see Coralles and castillio and think they know them because they watched round 10 of their first fight, they have never heard of Hernandez etc. |

Mayweather has a great resume, but some of his wins get overrated.
Baldomir - I don't care how the belts he won made him #1... he wasn't Mosley - good win, but tired of the he was "#3 p4p" nonsense.... losing to Cotto, going life and death with Mayorga and beating Margarito don't make you #3 p4p Chico - great win, a masterclass Genaro - great win JLC rematch - great win Oscar - great win Cotto - slightly overrated win but good |

Not crazy about considering Cotto the best at 154 due to how thin his resume is there, but then again, that division has been a damn mess for so long that he might get that distinction on the basis of work in the lower classes. This of course should not be taken as support for dodong's absurd suggestion that Sergio Martinez should somehow be considered the best there.

you could argue its not his fault.
He's beaten the best available that's for sure. But just because they were the best available at the time, that doesn't mean they are great wins. |
