There's plenty on the line here and nobody knows it better than Danny Green. It just can't be anything less than worthy opponent this time.

this would be great news, fight a credible opponent and if successful, give a local name the chance to rise to the challenge

Just heard Paul Upham on the Sweet Science say it was an undefeated American Cruiserweight. BJ Flores is the only American I can think of that fits the bill. In addition, I remember reading an article on secondsout.com very recently relating to BJ Flores. Apparently he is a free agent now as his contract with his promoter expired. It would therefore be very easy for Green to make a fight with Flores, and I think this makes the most sense. Here is the article below. Bring it on.

Cruiserweight BJ Flores is Now a Promotional Free Agent

PRESS RELEASE-LAS VEGAS (August 20, 2010)—Undefeated and world ranked cruiserweight BJ Flores is now a promotional free agent after his contract with Florida based company Square Ring Inc. has run out.

Flores of Las Vegas has been off for over a year and has a record of 24-0-1 with fifteen knockouts has not fought since scoring a fourth round stoppage over Epifanio Mendoza on August 15, 2009 in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Flores now will look forward to a new beginning and remains firmly on track to winning the cruiserweight championship of the world.

“I am looking forward to dealing directly with the promoters of all the champions and top contenders. It will be a lot easier to make deals directly”, said Flores.

“Just because I have not had a fight in a year, it doesn’t mean I haven’t been busy. I have been in cam with John Ruiz, David Haye and Chad Dawson and that has kept me beyond sharp. I am chomping at the bit to get one of the champions.”

“This last year has given me a chance to focus on power and strength. Becoming more explosive and powerful is necessary to become a world champion today. People will be surprised in my next fight.”

“I want to thank my manager Jerry Guliani for all the calls and emails he has put out over the past few days. I have no doubt he will secure a big fight for me very quickly.”

Flores has been training under the watchful eye of Jacob Chavez and strength and condition coach Ray Franklin.

“We are all excited about having an opportunity to put feelers out ourselves for the next opportunity”, said Chavez.

“BJ has been training really hard and he is in great shape. He is prepared to fight anybody and we want all of the champs and legitimate undefeated contenders. We know he is the best cruiserweight in the world.”

“This is a new phase in BJ’s career. He is way stronger and more powerful than ever before and we want him in the ring immediately. We have put any problems in the past behind us and this is a new chapter for us. BJ has not taken any breaks and works out every day like he has a giant chip on his shoulder. He is on a mission right now and his next opponent will be in for a rude awakening”, said Chavez

Franklin agrees and keeps fans up to speed on how Flores is progressing.

“He has a new found level of power and when you mix in the speed and ferocity, BJ is looking like what a world champion should look like.” said Franklin.

“We are looking forward to getting it on with anybody. All we need is just a reasonable time frame and not only will BJ win but he will do so in stunning fashion. He impresses everybody more and more everyday”

I will be shocked if Green fights a legit prime cruiserweight such as Flores. Runs on the board indicate that it just won't happen.
It will be another opponent that appears good on paper but to genuine boxing fans will be a soft option for Green. Is anyone gullible enough to believe otherwise ?

The thing I struggle to see falling into place here is a 200 pound Flores fighting a 184 pound Green.

Yes Flores is only an inch or so taller than Green, but will he come down in weight? Can Green be better with the addition of extra weight?

Sure the cruiser limit is 200, and yes normally that would mean Flores could come in at 200. But we all now know that holding an IBO belt gives you 'privileges' not found in other organisations.

Why wouldn't Paul Upham just say who it was?

He didn't want to steal Green's thunder. Classy approach for a journalist if you ask me.

He'll look silly if he knows and says nothing and somebody else releases his name. Don't think a journo can half release a story - he either says who it is or says nothing.

cause he doesn't know that's why!

what's all this critisism of the catch weight? if you are champ you do what you want, no different to putting options on guys if they win or them getting paid stuff all whilst the champ gets 90%, it is just one of "benefits" of being champ.

Are you on Green's payroll ? Green proclaims he is the "man" at cruiser yet absolutely refuses to fight one.

Disagree on the catch-weight bit Shiner.

Why should a natural cruiserweight (such as Flores, Vea, Cameron or anyone else for that matter) be denied a shot at a world title at 200lbs?

That's why the weight divisions were framed in the first place - so that everyone could fight within the weight division that best suited them.

If every titleholder did what Green's been doing, we'd end up with twice as many divisions as the ridiculously high number we've already got! Then each organisation would have a champion in each of them, and the whole sport would be twice as pathetic as it is now!

No, organisations should ensure wherever possible that the traditional weight divisions are honoured, not bastardised.
