Default How much is the shoulder involved in punching?

Boxers talk about putting there shoulder into the punch

How much do you think is the shoulders involvement in a big punch?

Is Training your shoulders a way to improve your punching power?

***i know the perfect shot comes from rotating back leg, hip and shoulder into punch**

no offense but i hate questions such as this

"how much legs are involved..."

"how much triceps are involved..."

when you punch no one muscle works alone, look at still images of a boxer throwing/landing a punch and you will see almost every single muscle in his body is flexed.

to punch harder you must ****en PUNCH

work on technique and footwork, you can have the biggest chest/shoulders what ever in the world but you wont be able to punch hard without knowing how to punch or without practicing.

Personally I think the shoulders and biceps and more involved in a hook and uppercut than people think. The best way to train these muscles for punching are to punch with them.

A punch starts in your toes and ends in your fists. The shoulder muscles are in between and as such they are involved. You put your shoulder in just like you put in your foot, your leg, your hip, your core, etc.

As much as any of the other muscles involved in a punch.

Unless you have an muscle imbalance in your shoulder isolating a single part of the chain is pointless.

Indeed. And there are two ways to get such an imbalance as far as I know. One is injury, the other is isolation of muscles (or muscle groups) in exercise.

Everything is involved there is one giant power line that runs from your toes to your fist and if your form breakes at any point between you loose a ton of the power you generated from the toes to that point.

you cant always commit to every punch by putting your whole body into it. You will miss and be countered. Somtimes you have to throw arm punches which come from your shoulder. If you train your shoulders specificly for punching, like throwing a med ball against a wall or even using light dumbells your shoulders will become stronger and i think will produce more power.

everyone knows a punch starts from your toes but you cant throw every punch with full force, it just doesnt work.

There's truth in that statement but I would not isolate the shoulders because of it.

That's not really training your shoulders specifically, specifically would involve isolation work purely for the shoulders. Throwing a med ball is not isolation.

but you are using your shoulder in the movement to throw the med ball so it will still strengthen the shoulder along with other muscles used in a arm punch. So the actual throwing part is replicated to a punching movement (shoulder only)
