Default 6 foot 1" vs 6 foot 10" (HELP)!!!!

Hi guys

Im yet to have my first fight but have been training very hard for it! im boxing 10 hrs a week and running 20 miles a week, i've done a little bit of sparring at my gym and felt ok at the end of it, my coach had just turned round and introduced me to my new sparing partner who is 6 foot 10" so alot taller than me, i'm a southpaw fighter and would really like some tips on beating this guy.

Cheers guys

you shouldn't be 'beating' anyone in sparring. It's a learning experience.

Why do you think they would put me with a guy this tall? im sure most guys i would fight would not be this tall i struggle to see what i could learn from sparring with him instead of a guy my own hight.

Practice slipping inside his jab and working his body, cut down the tree from the base.

Try to get close to him so you can hit him

Is he in or near your own weightclass?

while 6'10" is the LOL kinda tall, try to consider the benefits to having a range of various size and shaped sparring partners. Different heights, southie, ortho, various speeds, styles...the more the better. Try to learn what you can from it.

The sparring will be for his benefit aswell though. He has to spar someone

One punch you could try to get in is the straight left to the body, being taller and in opposing stance he'll likely be open there.

Go look at Dawson/Pascal. Tyson versus anyone. Holmes/Spinks.

I would say learn to bait him into a jab, slip, then follow the jab back with your own shots. Or get low, close distance quickly, and work like a madman inside.

This is a REALLY weird situation for you because at 6'1" you will probably NEVER face guys of those dimensions. You will never deal opponents of this size shape so everything you learn might very well be non-transferable. Oh well.

yep

pascal used a great tactic to beat dawson...

he circled around on the outside letting dawson chase him and as soon as he saw an opening or saw dawson out of balance he would jump in like a buzzsaw and throw combination and either get out quick or hold on.

Exactly. You should focus on improving your footwork and head movement while he'll undoubtedly be working to sharpen his jab.
