Default On a scale of 1-10 how effective would you say the speed bag is for boxing

Sure it looks cool to go back and forth really fast on the speed bag but how effective is it really for boxing? I pretty much mastered the basic punching of the speed bag in about 2 1/2 weeks. In about 2 months I could do combinations and a variety of different moves. 4 months later I sharpened up a little more and kind of lost interest. The problem to me was that I was never throwing any real punches like you would in a fight. Sure it improves reaction slightly but some of that is just getting used to the rhythm. In a real fight there is no rhythm as far as the punches that you're throwing or the punches that are being thrown at you. A real fight is all randomness that requires actual reaction time. I would rate the speed bag about 6 out of 10. Not the best for boxing but certainly not the worst.

I like it for a couple of rounds at the end of a workout when your shoulders are fatigued - it's a good exercise for building endurance in your shoulders.

Pretty useless, unless you use the Head rather than the Hands.

tru it builds alot of endurance in your shopulders, which i think is it's main purpose, but also it builds they shoulder for throwing constant conbinations, and fast ones

Couldn't you get that from working the heavy bag as well? Or even from shadowboxing?

as far as the heavy bag no cause you would be hitting a stationary target, but instead be swinging at a moving object, which will help your hand eye coordination. as far as shadowboxing maybe but the same thing seems to apply, you would be hitting a moving object multiple times, as in shadowboxing your swinging at air

Indeed, it's more useful for slipping.

When a hot girl walks in the gym, the speed bags start flying.

The speed bag is fun and looks cool, but I have never heard a trainer say its an effective training tool. Still, I do it almost everytime I train. It's therapuetic for me.

I think its also good for your peripheral vision because as you get better and better at it you can look away or just see it from the corner of your eye and still tell where its going. That also has to do with you getting used to the rhythm but learning rhythm/timing also helps.

Your hands are above your shoulders when using the speedbag (or at least they should be if the bag is at the right height) so it's different to hitting a heavy bag or shadowboxing.
