Default How do boxers dehydrate? methods?

As the title says.. to me it seems that even gaining 5 pds in 1 day is a lot but some boxers a lot actually in fact gain atleast close to 10.. some 15!! To me this seems like this may be even harder than all the training and dedication involved in getting ready for the fight etc..

Does anyone know methods involved in dehydrating? no fluid intake for a week? no food for a week? how long does the dehydration begin beforehand? an hour in the sauna everyday? just a lot of running? anyone know for sure how its done?

Sweat suit is a common method. No fluid for a week? Are you serious? That would result in death.

and ok maybe not for a week but for a couple of days before weighing in maybe? just running a lot with a sweat suit? sauna + sweat suit?

that shit is harder than the actual training and sparring i.m.o. ......

Dehydration should be a last resort to lose a few pounds. Find the weight your body stays at when you train and fight at the closest weight. Relying on high levels of dehydration to make weight is a bad idea.

From the questions you asked (not drinking or eating for a week) I'm guessing you're young. These methods are something you shouldn't be worrying about.

So you know how dehydration affects you mentally? The more dehydrated you get, the more water you want. I would rather push my body to the limits training cos it´s easyer to find motivation for it then to dehydrate yourself.

no professional boxers do it. its called having that extra source of motivation to push through any barrier you come across.

its a good way to gain an advantage in size. for example I can easily walk around mildly dehydrated in the 120 - 125 range just by having an extended cardio session and sweating a lot. I just need to lose a few more to be able to make the 118 class... that would be better than featherweight where other amateurs would be weighing over 130 on a consistent basis. I can make that easily.

Either you guys are going to help or not? I dont need a doctor and you arent my parents

I just wanted to see what you guys said but nobody here is an actual trainer or pro boxer anyway so you guys probably arent the best source for advice now that i think about it anyways but thanks appreciate it

What? You think boxers cut water weight for a challenge, to help "push through barriers"? Hmmm. No. It's to lose weight for a fight, nothing more.

Maybe you should try what you said in your first post and not drink anything for a week, then you'll have the mental strength to win any boxing match...

If i had to dehydrate, because i was entering a dehydration contest......plus fight.

The week leading up to the fight, i would cut out all Carboyhydrates..."Because Carboydrates retain water"............and i would just eat Chicken, Steak, Turkey i would just it protien, and the only carbs i would eat with be 50grams of Oats in the morning with some protien.I would probably drop 4lbs atleast just by doing this.

Then on the morning of the weigh in, i will go to the sauna take a duretic pill, and just sit there for however long i feel i can handle.

I would of probably dropped 8 pounds over the duration of the fight. And because i have been eating a high protien diet, still retained my muscle mass & density.

I'm 6"1 im always around 82kg.....180pounds.

I cut five pounds in a week by cutting carbs, eating salad and not eating after 8.

I can cut five pounds in a workout just in sweat.

Shit isn't rocket science.

I think most pro athletes who cut wieght for a fight (which should be all of them just about) dont solely rely on dehydration.

They walk around and train with a normal amount of fat, and as their fight approaches (usaully the last week or two, where they wind down there training/energy expenditure), they modify there diet and reduce their body fat down to really low levels. Then they take the last few pounds of with de-hydration.

There is nothing special to the de-hydration part. sweat suit and suana.

They use this method though because the wiegh ins for thier fights are a day or 2 before their fight, and they can easily and safely re-hydrate themselves without it affecting their energy levels for the fight.

If you are an amatuer fighter, and wiegh in on the same day of the fight, or fight within hours of weighing in, it would be a silly way to lose anything but small amounts of weight, as i doubt you would be able to recover in time.

Just my 2 cents, hope it helps.

Cut sodium from your diet so you don't retain more water than you should, since I barely eat sodium anyway it doesn't help much for me personally. Sea salt is better anyway. Apart from that there are a few ways to get rid of fluids. Pissing, sweating and spitting. Spitting won't dehydrate you quickly, pissing intervals can only be shortened with potentially dangerous chemicals, so that leaves you sweating. Since the purpose of sweating is to lower body temperature, all it takes to sweat a lot is increasing that temperature and stop sweating from doing its job so the sweat will keep coming. In other words sweat suits, ten layers of clothing and a garbage bag, a conversation with a hot girl, whatever makes you sweat will do.

Having said this, it can be dangerous and should only be used for very small amounts of weight for short lengths of time.

steam rooms and dieretics. its a fine line to cut weight safely. these guys are always much larger in person when i see them than what their weight classes suggest or the equivalents in amateur ranks- because of the weight they can cut due to the stakes, weigh in regulations etc. i box at 140-147 but when i ve met pro boxers i ve always been like- mcuh much smaller than the welters i see or meet. the equivalent pros my size fight at like 130. they kill themselves to lose that weight often times. but there are alot of exaggerated stories- like how oscar said he ate only oranges on the week of the fight to make 135. probaly bullshit.
