Exciting Sydney fighter Lenny Zappavigna booked a world title shot in the most emphatic fashion, with a crushing first round stoppage of Korean Ji Hoon Kim on Sunday.
Zappavigna (25-0, 17KOs) knocked Kim (21-7, 18KOs) down twice in the first 90 seconds of their IBF lightweight title eliminator at Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre.
A further flurry of blows from the relentless Australian prompted American referee Wayne Kelly to stop the bout after just 101 seconds.

Former Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Zappavigna will now get a world title fight with Mexico's Miguel Vazquez (26-3, 12KOs).
Zappavigna's management believes there is a more than a 90 per cent chance of securing the world title shot at home.
The 23-year-old Sydneysider quickly floored Kim with a right hand and knew from that point on he was going to win the fight.
"Once I dropped him, I knew I had him gone," Zappavigna said.
"I was punching harder, stronger and faster. He's a very rangy fighter.
"Everyone was saying I was going to have a hard fight, a lot of people doubted me."
"Now whether I fight Vazquez here or over there, I'm mentally prepared."

Would be great if they could get a tilt here in Oz - wonder why they are so confident of being able to get Vasquez over here?

Great result for Zappa too. Kim had only been stopped the once, and that was very early in his career, and he went the distance with Vasquez in Vasquez's last fight.

Agreed the strong Aussie dollar might prove attractive, but Garry Shaw is talking Texas or Southern California - not Oz:

Lenny Zappa Blasts Out Jin Hoon Kim

- The Sweet Science dot com - 31st Oct 2010.

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA (October 31, 2010) – LENNY ZAPPAVIGNA, aka LENNY ZAPPA, needed just 101 seconds to transform himself from undefeated Top-10 contender to International Boxing Federation (IBF) mandatory lightweight challenger when he blasted out top-rated Jin Hoon Kim last night in their IBF-sanctioned lightweight title elimination bout. The fight took place last night at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Center.

“Lenny looked spectacular in knocking Kim out in first round. He is the Australian version of Arturo Gatti His fighting style is that exciting!” said promoter Gary Shaw.

Lenny Zappa (25-0, 17 KOs), of Sydney, scored two vicious knockdowns of Kim inside the first 90 seconds of the fight. Referee Wayne Kelly stopped it at 1:41 with a defenseless Kim on the ropes and on the receiving end of a vicious ZappAssault. Kim (21-7, 18 KOs), of Goyang, South Korea, a one-time world championship challenger, suffered just his second loss over the past four years and 17 bouts.

“Bring on Miguel Vazquez,” exclaimed Lenny Zappa, referring to the IBF lightweight champion. “It’s time to bring another world title belt back to Australia.”

“I’m going to work hard to make his world title challenge of Vazquez in U.S. It would be perfect in Texas or Southern California,” said Shaw.

Australian by birth and Italian by descent, Lenny Zappa established himself as a prospect as an amateur. The four-time national amateur champion fashioned a 72-9 record which culminated with a Bronze Medal in the lightweight class at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, where he represented Australia.

With his improvements and this possible home advantage, Zappavigna stands an excellent chance at nabbing a world title from Vazquez.
