'Heroes of the Fancy'. One brilliant book. Still selling for just $50. One of the best publications I've read. A great report on Australia's 3 most important era's/events.

All Aussie fight fans NEED a copy of this book!!!

I cheekily thought since Ray had a first hand experience with Dean he may have rated him a bit

Far from it. Some dubious rankings none the less. You could argue for/against 20- 30 others being placed in the mix. The fighters from turn of last century is limited to a couple.

Modern fighters are too plentiful to mention.

Cheap titles seem to over ride the 'true career' fighters. It probably wouldn't sell unless the average Joe knew a little about 50% of the fighters listed.

That's could be true but to be fair modern fighters are probably fitter and have a higher work rate than the old timers.

Plus there's the power and muscle that comes with better diet and supplements.

Could anyone seriously imagine someone like Tommy Burns fighting the giants around today?

If Tommy could have gotten them into the later rounds he'd have been right. By about the 20th they'd be rooted

Tommy Burns was not a 20 round fighter. (Geoffrey Murphy).

Jack.. I dont believe the equasion should be thrown against Tommy as the brilliant Welter Champ he was, or the man who packed out Sydney Stadium so many times.

Drop him into the current mix, allow him to test his chin (as he did, via limited defense throughout a long career) with fighters who RUN from punishment in todays game.

Tommy Burns became a LEGEND as Welter Champ of Australia. His bout with Vic Patrick (ex lightweiight champ) was enormous, as were so many other classics. Tommy is the reason Stadiums Ltd started charging 'full fare' for female patrons. His audience was 5% female, to ogle at him when he boxed. Much like 100% Ashley perving at Spamdine...

Jackson.. As "Welter Champion of Australia", Tommy Burns retains a far greater respect for his efforts than most Welter champs in the Aussie history.

How many recent Australian Welter Champs will be remembered a week after their next bout, let alone in next 50 years??
