Although 140 might of been his best weight, so it might of been better to stay there for a while longer anyway.

These also happen to be three of the greatest fighters in the lightweight divisions history, all fighting in one era, perhaps the strongest ever for the limit. Fleischer called him "a champion in any other era". Probably right.

In other times his title defenses against Langford (not that green leaf Sam he fought), McVey, Jeannette or Willis would be a big time fight with full crowds.

I think if you can pick a HW who could beat Liston Patterson Frazier Foreman Norton , then they are pretty unlucky they weren't around instead of Ali.

Gotta go with jerry quarry on this. Not only were the champs ATGs when he was fighting, but the contenders were top notch too. There didnt seem to be an easy path to negotiate without fighting quality opposition,as it should be of course, but jerry didnt complain and just got on with it.

in that era any of the nearly men like jerry, chuvalo, lyle and shavers could have won a title in the 20's/30's until joe louis anyway.

Also, teleport Frazier into any other era(except the 90's) and he'd probably go undefeated...

yep joe was unlucky having ali and foreman around.. probably also liston unlucky having to face a very fast ali. wasn't ali there i could see liston being champ till the end of the 60ties..
and ofcourse al them great black fighters in the early 20th century when whites didn't face blacks a lot of times
