Default Should I hit the heavy bag...

..without bag gloves on, just wraps?

I ask because well i'm only starting out training really and after a few weeks I realised that I far prefer to hit it without the gloves. I find I get tired very quick with them on and my form suffers, without the gloves I feel fluid and fast and can carry on punching for quite awhile, putting together combos.

I'm not asking if its a bad idea because of my hand health, I don't overdo the power anyway, more concentrating on speed and combinations (pitty pat style). What i'm not sure about is the health of the bag. Its a 40kg leather Everlast and cost me a not insignifact sum of cash, so I dont want to damage it (I do occasionally put the power shots in).

Thanks for any advice

Put some gloves on, unless your training for a bare knuckle match. You need to get used to punching with the golves. if you want to train your hand speed and combos use a speed ball and floor to ceiling ball, you can hit them without gloves. as for the health of the bag, i'm pretty sure it's not doing that much more damage than with gloves on.

I used to do the heavy bag workouts without gloves, wraps, etc. but that was only after five or six years of intense karate training (my sensei was old school and had us hitting a makiwara--look it up--several hundred times per day) and god only knows how many thousands of knuckle push-ups. That said, I *still* occasionally strained my wrists, though thankfully never anything serious.

You'll thank yourself a hundred times over if you work the bag with some nice 16oz gloves. The first time I sparred with a pair I thought my shoulders would crumble and fall off. I also felt like I was moving in slo-mo. Now, I'm better conditioned than I've ever been and can spar with my partners for up to an hour without arm and shoulder collapse. And, yes, my speed has increased dramatically as a result.

Long story short--these guys are right on the money. Even if you don't break a wrist, your opponent likely will break your face when after a couple of minutes in the ring you can't hold your gloves up any longer.

what an idiot 'i have better form without gloves' how are you going to use your 'better form' when you have to spar with 16's?

Don't listen to these 'hardcore' guys. The better boxer ALWAYS protect his hands with wraps and bag gloves for training.

you should always have wraps and gloves on when hitting a heavy bag. i don't care if you are only going for speed. if you are hitting with lightning fast punches a lot of strain is put on your hands/ wrists/ etc. the only time you really don't need gloves is if you plan to half ass it in your workout. save your hands, their your main tools in boxing.

I use gloves and wraps more protection for my hands the better. My friend doesnt but hes a martial artist and has been conditioning his hands since he was like 5 or summit. Why would you risk damage to the most important tools you have not just for boxing but life generally? Wrap up and use gloves like everyone else has said.

Yes, put your gloves on.. Bang that thing like its cool to break it in half... Cant do that with out gloves, or you will injure a hand and wind up on the bench for a month or forever... Its harder with gloves, but you need to condition yourself....
