Default Bennie Briscoe dead.

Bennie Briscoe died yesterday in Philadelphia, aged 67.
Best remembered here for his defeat of Tony Mundine in 5 rounds, in Paris,1974.

Bad news that HOF.

Was a big fan of Mundine Snr, and remember he was on a string of impressive wins until Briscoe knocked the wind out of his sails.

RIP Champ.

from Fight News dot com:

Bennie Briscoe, one of the best never to win a world title (when world titles meant something) and the man who presided over the last Golden Age of Boxing in Philadelphia (the 1970s) passed away today at 5.52pm EST.

He had been in Temple University hospital for about a week before being moved to hospice. His wife Karen, who I have been in contact with over the last two weeks, called my at about 6.20pm EST to give me the news

Not sure what took Bennie out - have searched around a bit - but stumbled on the fact that Angelo Dundee's wife Helen has also passed away:

Angelo Dundee's 'Toughest Fighter,' Wife Helen, Dies at Age 85

by Lem Satterfield - Fanhouse dot com - 28th Dec 2010

As an 89-year-old dean of boxing trainers, Angelo Dundee has worked with 16 world champions, among them, Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Carmen Basilio, George Foreman and Willie Pastrano.

But none of them has earned the reputation of his "toughest fighter."

That title belonged to his beloved wife of 58 years, Helen Dundee.

But on Thursday evening, Helen Dundee lost her battle with a long series of illnesses at the Sun Coast Hospice in Palm Harbor, Fla., near their home in Clearwater, according to Angelo Dundee's manager, Mark Grismer.

She was 85.

"Helen passed away on Thursday evening, but Angelo is handling it really well. Angelo was expecting it. She had been sick for a long time and had been hospitalized for 10 days, but he always said that she was his toughest fighter and she never gave up," said Grismer.

"We put her in a hospice and he went over and he visited her, and she passed away a couple of hours later on Thursday evening at around 9:30," said Grismer. "She had had cancer and had had part of her lung removed about 15 years ago. She's had chronic health problems ever since. She just wore out. She was in no pain, and she passed away comfortably."

(coincidentally reading a book today called 'Axis of Greatness' a book focused on Dundee, Ali & Leonard - good read - and got it for $12)

Mate, thats a nice title for a book. Although, for $12, you'd think it was the books 'interim' title.

Boom, boom!

Would've been disappointed at full price, but got it in the bargain bin and well worth the read on the banana lounge in the sun today.

Briscoe kept coming forward relentlessly, and cutting the ring off. Mundine's evasive skills that kept him alive for the 4 or 5 rounds, till he was finally pinned and never coming out of that corner.

Cheers for the footage App80.

No worries, Briscoe was some different type of beast... His fight with Hagler was brutal... You can imagine them doing for free in one of those Philly gyms... He sure got the short end of the stick, fighting Monzon and Valdez in his 3 title shots.. Valdez was special too...

One question , how the **** does an Colombian (Valdez) end up in his first defence fighting an Argentinian (Corro) in Italy???

Probably the safest place for either fighter to be. Colombians are not especially favoured in Argentina, and Argentinians are not especially favoured in Colombia.

****ed if I'd be the ref...

It wasn't that surprising. Europe was the place for the big Middleweight fights in the 1970's.
Monzon defended against Griffith in Monte Carlo, against Napoles in Paris, and against Valdez, twice, in Monte Carlo.
Both the Valdez and Briscoe fights were held in Monte Carlo and Switzerland.
