Actually his father is still regarded as the better player up north. He absolutely carved up the North QLD League comp year after year as a halfback I believe.

So he didn't come from nowhere.

Didnt know about his old man. But the point still stands. He didnt make any rep teams. Got there through 10 years of hard work and great coaching.

How do you know if he'd have signed a contract or not??

You have no idea about any rep teams he made or didnt make, he was playing SOO at 20

Because he said so? That Broncos were not interested in him and didnt offer him a contract unlike many others.

He made the Area Rep teams, being Innisfail who played agains the other Far North teams ie Cairns, Mt Isa, Townsville etc. So he did play rep footy. He then played with Smith as Schoolboys in rep. Played together since they were 14-15 I believe.

there wasnt a national Rugby League back then, plenty of Bush players stayed in the bush or stayed in QLD, there wasnt much money for players in Sydney & some large country towns payed about as much as Sydney if they had some decent industry & decent sponsorship

The only way Bush players would play for Australia was if they had blinders against visiting overseas teams or played well in City VS Country or QLD vs NSW ( which wasnt state of origin back then)

A player like Slaters old man ( whom i've never seen or heard of) would have been near invisible playing up there, there werent really as many opportunities to compare players in massive areas like QLD, players had to work real jobs through the week etc so they had few precious oportunities to travel to play against other areas / districts/ cities/ states etc

So there ya go kid, i taught you something for nothing

They played together for Norths Devils.

Cronk attended St. Laurence's College, South Brisbane from 1994–2001, where he represented the Schools the 1st XV rugby union side for number of years.[citation needed]

The only who made rep teams was Cronk. You cannot really call playing for innisfail a representative honour.

Well even to this day, scouting in regional QLD is very limited.

Thats besides the point I was making. The Storm made these players. They didnt come to us as world class players. This is the result of 10 years of hard work. Not simply an open cheque book.

How many world class players have souths developed from schoolboys?
Lets see:

Inglis: bought from Melbourne
Crocker: bought from Melbourne
Burgess bros: bought from UK
Asotasi: bought from Bulldogs
King: bought from Melb via UK
Taylor: bought from Brisbane

Adam Reynolds and Isaac Luke are probably the only homegrown stars.

The last time melbourne bought an experieced star was Crocker and that was after he couldnt get a contract elsewhere due to his bad boy image.
