Default Larry Gains KO's Phil Scott in 2 rounds

Here's one for any classic fans who hadn't seen it - it's new to me so I guess some of you will appreciate getting a chance to see it - even if very short and somewhat Tyson-Seldonesque - anyways here you go

Rocky, what a clear film of that fight.Phil Scott was called "Fainting Phil Scott"
and he was kod too often. Incidentally, Larry Gains, wrote a book about the fighters of his time. I read an excerpt from the book, and the fighter Larry Gains held in AWE,was you guessed it Harry Greb. I must get that book he wrote again. Years ago I borrowed it from my local library. Good read....

Thank God someone said it before me. I don't know what to make of Gains at all based on this highlight. He looked very awkward, and not terribly impressive from this footage, but then it was hardly the most conclusive.

I have a bunch of Larry Gains footage and Ive never been impressed by him. He is held in high regard by some but I cant understand why.

Here's some film of parts of Gains' fight against Primo Carnera - about 16/17 years ago there used to be an old guy that used to go in my local pub (for any americans that means a rough old bar) and he said Larry once came in for a drink at that very pub years ago - and he also used to see him at our local dog-track aswell which he used the frequent - he described him as being the size of a barn door

He sure had no problem landing that crazy overhand right on Primo time and again ...

Let's be honest - at the very least he gave Carnera a good slapping - not saying he was the next Joe Louis or anything but he was handy enough - would he have beaten someone like Carnera (when champ) or say Braddock when they were champs - maybe? He fought my grandads mate Jack London too - i think he looked a pretty snappy hitter and didn't look like a fighter who was prone to being overawed in the big fights - I think just going on very brief bits of footage I've seen of him that he could've held his own on his best nights - was without doubt a more poised and cultured boxer than say Maxie Baer

Scott was awful.
I wouldn't call that a Bruce Seldon performance though. He at least got hit.

I think Marcel Thil is extremely underrated. Duilio Loi was damn good. Sandro Mazzinghi was good. Im looking into Bubi Schulz right now as per the recommendation of one of the posters on here. I think very highly of Laurent Dauthille and Robert Villemain as well and think they were both more proven than Marcel Cerdan (hows that for a comment to stir the pot).

And Im not just being jingoistic about Scott. He was terrible. I have several of his fights on film and the guy had possibly the worst chin in history. He had several Seldonesque moments.

I have the Gains vs. Jack London bout. One or two of them. He looked terrible in those. Same with the Harvey fight. Same with Peterson, Foord, Strickland, Neusel, McCorckindale. He just never really impresses me. Even the fight with Carnera he wasnt that impressive and got dropped at one point.

Dauthuille, Villemain, Thil and Cerdan were all very good.

Scott was awful, I agree.

I think Gains was good though. Circa 1928 - '32 he would have been a good opponent for the likes of Sharkey, Schmeling, Stribling, Loughran, Walker etc.
It wasn't exactly a high point in the heavyweight division.

I think he was probably, or definitely, past his best for most of those fights.
Yeah, maybe he wasn't an all-time world beater, but he was good.

I thought he looked pretty good against Carnera.
