Default If You Were The Boxing God: What Would You Change?

I know most people will say similar things because it’s obvious, but if I were god… I would only have one belt (WBC) and only 7 divisions.

I would make all the little guys fight @ featherweight, and I would take away the super middleweight division, as super middleweights are really light heavyweights in disguise.

I would also get rid of all these stupid junior divisions so that all the top fighters face each other.

Anyway here’s my list of divisions:

Heavyweight
Cruiserweight
Light-Heavyweight
Middleweight
Welterweight
Lightweight
Featherweight

What would you change about the sport if you had complete power?

I would outlaw three of the four major sanctioning bodies and the Ring Magazine.

I would abolish the stupid "The Champ"-status (because of B-Hop and Casa).

The #1 has to fight a real contender of his own weigh class every six months.
If you don't fight at least once a year you'll get kicked out of the top10.

Make the elite fighters fight each other when they are the divisons 1 and 2, with there being only one belt. The World (insert weight) Title.

Would make David Haye's chin titanium. Would make Froch fight a Top 10 fighter and then Lucian Bute.

1. Get rid of the sanctioning bodies, and make De La Hoya sell ring magazine to a credible non bias independent name who could give great top 10 ratings (ring is still very good but De La needs to get his name away from it) then we would only have 1 true champion again.

2. Get rid of PPV and give major boxing deals to ABC, NBC, and CBS.

3. Bring back 15 round fights

4. Make the champion's next fight after a defense no longer than 6 months after the date of his previous defense barring a serious injury. If he does not fight then he is immediately stripped and the #1 and #2 contenders will fight for the ring title and the former champion is moved to #1 in the rankings by default with the loser of the 1 vs 2 fight staying at 2 and the winner of couse becoming champion.

5. The champion has to fight a #1 contender at least once a year.

That right there would be all you need.

Cut off the weights at featherweight?!? That's a stupid ass idea.

I'm all for getting rid of the Jr/Super weight divisions... go with:

Heavy - 200+
Cruiser - 200 limit
Lt. Heavy - 175 limit
Middle - 160 limit
Welter - 147 limit
Lightweight - 135 limit
Featherweight - 126 limit
Bantam - 118 limit
Flyweight - 112 and below (or make flyweight 112, and keep straweight as 105 and below)

The judging! Something must be done to upgrade the judges poor performances.

Put up a commission that will review the judges performance specifically that one that figures out in controversial decissions and sack them if found incompetent.

The number of judges should be four in every fight positioned in the four sides of the ring. With the ref being the fifth judge.

With total of five scorecards controversial decissions can be more justified.

Let the ref watch at replay on a controversial knockdown. He could review it at the end of the round.

Oh and I would make sure they ALWAYS show the damn ring card girls between rounds for a minimum of 10 seconds!

Go back to the original weight divisions except keep cruiserweight. Get rid of all the sanctioning bodies, and create a a truly international governing board that sanctions one world title for each weight class, and a series of national or regional titles (North American, European, et.) A world champion must defend his title against a top 3 once every 6 months. (Of course he could fight non-title tune-up fights and special challenges.) The international governing board would also train and certify both judges and referees. AND hold them accountable. If a ref or judge screws a fighter, the board fines the **** out of him. If it happens a second time, they ban him from boxing for life. Get rid of pay per view, and put boxing back on the major networks.
