Yeah, I did this interview with Emanuel last week. So far this was the 7th "history themed" piece we worked on together. I'm hoping to conduct many more, and hopefully with far greater frequency going forward. I enjoy these a great deal, and never get tired of hearing Emanuel's perspective. Thanks for reading! |

Gotta love Steward: the most bias trainer in boxing. I remember watching an interview with him about Prince Naseem and he claimed Naz was the best featherweight in history and would have beaten Willie Pep - LOL. I also read an article where he spoke about how Lennox would have beaten Ali.
I don't trust much of what he says. |

Lewis was in his prime when he fought a past it Evander and got a gift in the second fight and fought a timid first fight.
Against the ghost of Mike Tyson Lewis was so scared to commit that Steward was screaming at him between rounds. But he beats those guys in their primes... sure. |

Yeah and dont forget the Mercer fight where he basically had to tell him to stop crying like a bitch and get out there and fight. Steward's ego is as big as lewis' was.
Funny to hear him say that about Futch too. Futch is on record saying that was a horrible mistake Bowe made throwing his belt away and blamed Newman for orchestrating that. He felt the Lewis fight would have been Bowe's defining moment. Stewards a great trainer but he talks a lot of shit and just listening to his on air commentary where he flip flops from one side to the next is proof of it. Lennox learned how to fight like a real champ but never as good as prime Tyson, Bowe or Holyfield and these guys wouldnt have allowed Lewis to fight at a slow outside pace. I think he would have had his hands full with all three of those guys, and his fight with Ray Mercer was proof of that. |

This was a fantastic read. Awesome stuff and greatly insightful.
Interesting to hear that about bowe. I'd recently believed the theory that team bowe always felt they'd have won but it was a money issue. I think around that time bowe would have beaten lewis but prime for prime it's a mismatch. The only other thing I disagree with is tyson-lewis. I think prime tyson bombs him out before 6. |

Its funny how Steward thinks nobody has ever seen the Tyson fight. "We had Lennox go right out and fight him toe to toe, we didnt care if won or lost, just show him we were there to fight."
Sure Manny. Watch that first round again and see how fast Lennox is peddling around the ring on his bicycle, trying to hang on for dear life at every Tyson rush, with a worried look on his face and then see Manny's reaction in between rounds after the first and tell me that was all planned. |

It doesn't surprise me that Steward speaks highly of Larry Holmes. Steward and Lewis was a great match. However, Steward was not good for De La Hoya and Hamed. De La Hoya's technique was erratic and sluggish under Steward. He totally destroyed Hamed's style as he became flat-footed and hittable. Hamed's hands down style was made for foot and waist movement. He was very "straight up and down" under Steward.

Oscar Saurez is the one who ruined Hamed. Although I dont think Hamed was ever that good to begin with. He did the same thing with Freitas.
Steward barely had a chance to effect Hamed's style because Saurez who was amateurish at best monopolized his time. |
