Default Shavers vs. Young

Despite being a fan of both guys, I've never seen either of their two fights and know very few details of them. Have any of you seen either bout or know if footage even exists?

These are 'two' tough fights to get any film footage of.
But they do exist.
I just can't remember who had them.

I've got tho think about this, as it may have been a local Television Station out
of Philadelphia.

The very first bout Carol Polis ever judged was Shavers-Young I, so I'd expect her recall of that event to be quite vivid. She does have a Twitter account, so it may be feasible to ask her directly about this historical occasion. (I don't "tweet" myself.)

Earnie is the only man to ever floor Jimmy, and he did it in both their bouts.

Yeah, given the guys he fought, and the amount of losses on his record, it's save to say that he had quite a chin. Figures it would be Shavers who got to him. Thanks guys for the leads on this mystery fight.

Young was "thrown in" in the first fight having only 10 fights against a bomber with 42 kayo's like Shavers.

Young must have had a lot of balls just to get in the ring in the first fight.

definitely he was rushed along a little too fast. This was not the Duane Bobick route to the top...

I have to check out something on this fight,

Jimmy Young may have been a last-minute replacement.
I do not think he was the originally scheduled opponent for Earnie.

So it appears he wasn't just thrown in there.
Probably got an offer of $1000 for the fight, instead of his normal $300.
Boxing is a 'rough business'.

It's a shame that Young and Shavers didn't meet in a third bout...Young would have decisively defeated Earnie.

Jimmy Young was a replacement fighter.

Roy 'Tiger' Williams was the originally scheduled fighter for the
February 19, 1973 bout at the Philadelphia Spectrum.

But, Roy Williams pulled out.
Williams had just lost a decision to Richard Dunn (January 15, 1973).
Whether he was injured (which he claimed) or did not want to risk another loss,
he pulled out.

A scramble to get another 'name' heavyweight to fight Earnie Shavers came up empty.
A local heavyweight from Philadelphia was the only one willing to get into the ring with Shavers.

Jimmy Young had not fought in 11-months, and been more-or-less a 'gym-rat' and
part-time sparring partner for Joe Frazier.
Flat out,,,,,,,,,he needed the money,,,,,,,,,a paltry $1000.

If anyone does twitter Carol Polis, ask what round the bout ended. There has always been a bit of dispute on this. Was it the 1st round or the 3rd round?
