I know Young trained at Joes gym was he at that time That's kind of strange if they trained at the same gym to fight each other this was the first fight right?

After that he was a work in process...and developed his magic powers of defense. At peak form..from '75 to '78 he would have treated Earnie with contemptuous ease. Young is my favorite fighter as well from the golden 70's..I love watching Foreman-Young in particular.

RED C,,,,,

Jimmy Young was not thrown in with Earnie Shavers in February 1973.
Jimmy had not fought in a year, and had no money, no backing, no nothing.
He was offered $1000 for the fight, and took it because he needed the money.

I'm guessing that at the time, with a record of 7-3, he wasn't expected to develop into anything more than a journeyman type fighter/sparring partner.. The Shavers fight was probably seen as a good payday and given that he wasn't exactly being groomed as the next heavyweight champ, was urged to jump on the opportunity to pick up a decent check..

No one mentions the rematch draw. I've not seen either fight. Did Earnie put the green Jimmy down for the count? I've heard other reports that it was some kind of 3 KD's in a round thing and Jimmy was bitching at the stoppage.
But, your reports seem to indicate a KO...
What did happen...and any reports on the Draw rematch?...

Thats a tough way to make 1000 dollars. I mean for a guy thats not expected to win. I wonder if he'd even been training for the fight, being he hadn't fought for 11mo and was a replacement.

Originally, Roy Williams was supposed to be scheduled.
But he cancelled, and a call out was for a local Philadelphia Heavyweight,
crazy enough to get into the ring with Earnie Shavers.
$1000,
It was the main undercard fight, for the Main Event with Ernie Terrell.

The famous Obie English, turned down the $1000 offer.

I agree, fellow Young fan. I've actually heard that Young should've gotten the verdict in the rematch. Foreman-Young was a great fight and he made George look more limited than he usually was.

I would really like to find out more about Jimmy, both personal and boxing wise, not much out there on him. I know his son Jason boxed, but I see nothing on boxrec about him. So, I;ll stay tuned to my fav boxing site!

Not sure what Jimmy was doing exactly before the Earnie Shavers I fight.
He was, as most say, a 24 year-old Gym Rat, looking to pick up some small cash as
a sparring partner, even for the top Light Heavyweights too.

Obie English, another Philadelphia Heavyweight was his friend.

The only minor stuff I can dig up about Jimmy's early days, was that he was
a sparring partner for hire, at $25 a session.
Occasionally he would be hired for $175 per week for anybody needing longer
preparation sessions.

In 1969, just shy of his 21st birthday he turned professional.
2-quick bouts in Philadelphia on 10/28/69 and 12/9/69.
Both wins.

In March 1970, he went to San Diego, California.
And stayed there from March thru July.
He worked as a sparring partner for Ken Norton, and a few other rising prospects.
His fee, $175 per week, plus gym and travelling expenses.
He also had 2-bouts in San Diego, before returning back to Philadelphia in early-July.

He lost a 6-round decision to U.S. Amateur Star, Clay Hodges (1-0-0) on 4/30/70 in San Diego.
And, he won a 4-Round decision over 300 lb. 'Fat' Jimmy Gilmore (5-11-1) on 6/22/70.

He also worked with Kenny Norton, in helping him prepare for his bout with Jose Luis Garcia, on 7/2/70.

..Yes techks..and it's significant esp. when you consider what George would go on to do with his career...Young was his kryptonite. I love the cool attitude Young had in that ring BEFORE the first bell...that fight never gets old to me!!

Well Il Duce...I still think he was in there with Shavers before he was ready. He wasn't quite Jimmy Young yet.
