yes, yes you are perez killed the fight by allowing clay to hold frazier behind the head through out the fight and even after over a hundred warnings never even took a point away from clay

It wasnt as good as the 1st and 3rd (what was?) but i wouldnt call it boring. Not a bad fight in its own right although poor old tony perez, a fine ref normally, had a poor night

It wasn't boring, it was just very tame compared to Ali-Frazier I & III, which were legendary, brutal wars.

Perez stopped the bout from being a great war, by allowing Ali to illegally hold Frazier around the neck 147 times in 12 rounds...shameful.

I'd guess 99.9% of people who've seen the fights agree with you.

If holding the head down was illegal, the bitch should have been disqualified!

Had Perez enforced the no-holding early, Ali would have went to other tactics. If somethings working and helping you win, you keep doing it. Thats what champions do.

Ali outboxed Frazier that night. When he wasn't holding, more often than not, he was hitting without being hit in return. The hate for him is getting ridiculous.

Eddie attempted to make Joe less hitable in this bout and to make it easier for Joe to add a right hand regularly to his asernal by making his feet and body positioning less squared off. It didn't really work (Joe did land one big right hand lead) and resulted in Joe throwing less to the body and moving forward slower,,,that and Ali's holding made for a far less interesting fight.

I am an Ali fan, so there is no hate coming from me... I totally agree with 'timmeres612' comment, Eddie was a clever trainer but in this fight adopted the wrong strategy plus the fact that Ali decided to 'dance' more than the first fight when he was on the ropes.

Frazier's options were limited by Ali's neck-hold tactics.
He was always going to have to get close enough to do his work, at which point Ali had already grabbed his neck and pulled him in.
The fight was actually close.
Apart from the holding, Ali fought well, he threw a good amount of punches. Frazier got some heavy licks in too.
But, yes, the fight wasn't a thriller or anything. I think that was Ali's fault. But without th holding it could have ended up like the one later in Manila, and that may have finished both fighters off before Ali even gets a chance to regain the championship.

It did n't have the impact of their first fight,or the brutality of the third. Being a non-title bout, the shorter distance played it's part in that. Still a very good fight though. In my opinion,Ali deserved the verdict. YES,even taking the clinching into account. It's weird though. It was almost like Ali and Frazier knew that their final bout, which took place eighteen months later, was going to be savage, and they were pacing themselves through the middle section of the trilogy.
