hagler from the caveman lee fight would find roy tough to catch and would fall behind on points...but i rank that era of marvin as the greatest middleweight i've seen on film. it would be a great fight and i'm not so confident of my boys chances in this one

If the bout was 15 rounds, I think Jones would be ahead early on points through speed, but Hagler will gradually chip away with his tenacity. Jones is winning for much of the bout, but would be worn down near the end. If Marvin really wanted to KO an opponent, he could do so, sooner or later. I'll take Hagler by 13-15th round TKO, in just about the best MW title fight ever.

He definitely got better especially dealing with bigger stronger guys. He hit his peak as a LH. You can't say he was at his best just because he beat his best opponent.

Agreed, if Hagler could take the speed & power of Hearns without taking a backwards step. Hagler would keep coming foreward & making it a brawl. Eventually finding Jones' fragile chin. Hagler by mid rounds brutal knockout.
Possibly from behind, But Hagler in this mode would gladly take a few to deliver his own shots.

Jones fights nothing like Hagler.

Jones has more power than Hearns at Middleweight and definitely more speed. Also definitely a better chin than Hearns at Middleweight.

Speed goes to Jones by far as well as the necessary lateral movement that would surely frustrate Hagler.

Let's remember that a prime Jones Jr. was excellent at making guys miss.

Hearns may very well have beaten Hagler had he this attribute when they fought.

When facing the very elite below 175 lbs, Jones' mentality, moreso than his chin. is questionable IMO. His chin wasn't of any real concern until he went to HW and came back down really. I think that throughout his career, given what I can deduce about his mentality, he wouldn't cherish a war, which I'm adamant Hagler would turn it into. However, I must note that Roy fought the likes of B-Hop and Toney and many LHWs ... say what you like, but there's no way that he doesn't get his chin checked fighting all these opponents. B-Hop checked him with no seemingly adverse effect.

Can I see Jones outboxing Hagler comfortably? Yes! Can I see Hagler working the body and catching up with him in the championship rounds and winning a SD or perhaps a TKO given an overly cautious referee (for me, such a match up has to be a 15 rounder)? Yes! Do I see Hagler sparking Jones? No! Hagler's one punch power isn't sufficient IMO and Jones' mentality and apparent lack of warrior spirit means that he's not likely to be put into that position.

Yeah, I definitely can, because I judge with my eyes. I actually noticed a significant drop-off with Jones at Lt. Heavyweight.

Doesn't really matter as far as I'm concerned. Jones's style wasn't one that really needed nurturing. He reached his peak (and maintained it, mind) quite early.

Yeah right. You're the only one that thinks that then.

I also think that for the most part.

I really see no evidence whatsoever that he 'definitely' got better once he moved up to 175.

I wouldnt exactly say he dropped off either but once his opposition became so consistently average we saw some truly uninspired performances from Roy.

No, because I can add my name to the list of people who thinks that. Jones was better at smw than he was at lhw.
