Foreman had the better chin, but Louis the superior recruperative powers. I think Louis' power, speed, accuracy, efficiency and cute style would spell trouble for the defensively porous-at-times Foreman.

Foreman's stamina was more the issue, not his chin. Not his fault he wasn't put down in the early rounds vs light heavyweights. |

I'm quite confident Louis would win this actually. More confident than I would be if Frazier or Tyson were his opponents.

I have a good interview with Louis from around 1975 in which he's full of praise for Foreman's power. Not that I'm saying that backs up any "Foreman wins" argument because we all know how highly George rated Joe.

Holyfield couldn't even floor Pinklon Thomas despite hitting him about a thousand times but he still decked and stopped Gay Mike. |

Louis had the better legacy, but Foreman does better in the head to head department.
That's really about as complicated as this thread needs to get. |

So then, how exactly do you see the fight unfolding (from a stylistic viewpoint). What kind of distance do you envisage the fight lasting? |

Round 1 is probably as far as this one goes if George lands first. If Braddock could put Louis on the floor early then George is more than capable of doing so and keeping him there. If Louis starts slow George blows him away.
If Joe comes out like he did against Schmeling then he wins in the mid rounds but gets busted up along the way |

Neither fighter had the best defense (Joe's was better), and neither had the best balance, (Joe's was better, but this contributed to some of his knockdowns).
I see George going forward behind his jab, with Joe staying just out of range, trying to measure. George may not land that big overhand right cleanly, because Joe would be inside by then, but it would be hitting Joe around the back of the head and keeping him off balance. Joe scores heavy counters up top and to the mid-section while taking heavy hands from Foreman on the way in. George, the faster starter, misses the first couple of tries, but as Joe gets closer in, George's punches are telling- even the ones not flush. By round two or three, George catches Joe at the end of a right and gets aggressive, beating Louis into the canvas ala Norton. |
