Default Roy Jones Jr. vs. the smaller hws (stay out PowerPuncher ;-) )

In general is a thread about Roy Jones Jr. against Wlad. Well, this got me a bit thinking. Jones isnīt really proven at hw but anyway, how would he do against the smaller top class hws. Like Dempsey, Tunney, Schmeling, Charles, Marciano? Would the Jones of the Ruiz fight be good enough to beat some of them?

edit:
and what about Toney?

Jones didn't even come close to stopping Toney when Toney was in no condition to fight. Just imagine what would have happened if Toney was in condition to fight .. Toney's losses were due to him being a stupid obese with a serious eating disorder , if he were anywhere near condition to fight like he was in the Jirov , Barkley , Holyfield , Guinn , Littles , Nunn fights he would have stood a good chance at stopping Roy , and Roy knew it which is why no rematch ever and will never happen , still he found time to rematch an even older Hopkins and fought a dying Mike McCallum at 175 .. and is not even ashamed to mention it in "Ya'll Must Have Forgot"

Yeah, in the sense of "how would Toney do against those guys?". You can answer on that one, we all know your answer on the other question.

Thought you were asking how Jones would do against Toney

Toney circa Holyfield/Jirov would cause problems but not do enough against most of these, I think he'd score an upset win over someone, maybe Dempsey or Tunney

Why would you think that Dempsey or Tunney was one of the better prospects for him to beat?

They were smal yeavyweights yes, but among the most dangerous ones.

Jones never had the chin to deal with any kind of heavyweights. He really never belonged at LH. At his best it would be a matter of whether guys could catch him, but as he slowed and became ordinary, he was nothing more than a super middle. I think if Jones consistently fought at heavyweight even at his best, he would have gotten knocked out more, even against the smaller guys.
Toney in retrospect had the chin to hang in there with the heavies and would have done better, because he could use his quickness to be a better boxer and infighter while not getting hurt as much as I think Jones would have.

Dempsey had issues thrughout his career with defensive counter punchers. Tunney-Toney would be a pure boxing match, where Toney thrives

Or you could just put them in with Leon Spinks where they might have a chance.

Ok..Roy Jones vs one of the smallest heavies..Rocky Marciano..Rocky catches up with, and brutalizes Jones for a 7th round ko.
Roy Jones vs the smallest heavy..Tommy Burns..Jones speeds his way to a 15 round decision in a fight resembling the Ruiz match.
Jones vs Dempsey.. Dempsey finds Jones with his left hook in 5..fight over.
Jones vs Tunney...They both box on somewhat even terms for 6 rounds before Tunney takes over...discipline over intuition...Tunney's right decks Jones in the 9th..again in the 11th and a badly battered Jones is tko'ed.
Jones vs Schmeling..despite trailling widely for 10 rounds, Max's methodical attack and right hand counter bombardment crumbles Jones in round 11.
Jones vs Charles...an entertaining battle which seesaws back and forth for 8 rounds before Charles hurts and finishes off Jones with a single left hook in round 9.

Tunney's mobility would be a huge asset against Toney imo. Toney never liked that, McCallum was proving that but to Toney's credit he still did well enough to beat his man, great fighters win even when the styles match up is against them sometimes. McCallum doesn't do back foot boxing as well as Toney can though. The only way Toney is winning that for me is if it is true that fighters from that era are too primitive, that's not usually my standpoint.

head to head, i actually give Jones a far better chance against most heavies than anyone else on the board. In fact, while i dont think he would beat say, a Muhammed Ali, i do think that he causes ali more problems (and has a better chance) than many other fighters. I think there are quite a few far better fighters, who Jones would surprise and upset. I am not necessarilly sure whether they would all necessarilly be smaller heavyweights either.

against dempsey i don't like his chances in the least

against tunney though i think he's got a real serious shot. tunney's movement was brilliant as was his jab but roy had the movement himself to surround that jab, neutralize it and land steady right hand counters over top. it's tough to say cause the only guy who really beat tunney was greb (footage which we have yet to uncover) but I think roy could pull this one out

Tunney KTFO Jones IMO. too mobile, durable, and a very accurate head/body hitter at LH and HW. It's clear the guy was a very skilled and smart boxer...

i'd like to see Jones vs. Schmeling, Walcott, Baer, Langford, and a couple others. but honestly i don't see him beating a lot of atg hws.
