Yeah, and when I say a killer, I mean a hit man type who made his living killing in a cold, impersonal sort of way...not a common thug killing for the stupid joy of it. I regret this too about how he ended up.

He was like an alien predator that knew all he had to do was just walk down and impose himself on an inferior opponent. He was smart enough to employ the right tactics against the right foe..like to box and throw many punches on the retreat vs Briscoe, for instance, but he did stand and trade with BB in the last 5 rounds. He had incredible mental toughness and resolve, with more than made up for the lack of spectacular natural gifts and speed and power, though he did have power, esp. in the earlier stage of his title reign. This mental toughness was no better shown than in the 2nd Valdez fight, when he bounced right up from that kd to impose his will gradually on Valdez.
Red, I'll definitely buy this...Good breakdown. Monzon was detached, but his immense pride was very evident. Definitely nasty...Robinson was a mean guy too, but he was fiery...Monzon was calculating, and fought totally to his strengths.

Besides Ayub...What do you think lora? What/who impresses you from a standpoint of mental toughness?

Well Masao Ohba is one who probably won't get mentioned.

Similar to Sanchez, Buchanan and Monzon in that he was brilliant at accelerating as the fight went on.However, he lacked the chin those men had, having to overcome being badly hurt early several times. It never seemed to bother him though.

I'll have to have a look after that recommendation...you are a much more well-rounded observer than I am...Cheers.

Ali, as much as I don't like him, was tough as hell mentally. He never quit, despite taking some poundings.

A severely lacerated Gene Tunney, fighting to the bone against what he described as a "red filmed phantom" was an instance of a fighter going far beyond the call of duty.
