What would have happened if these two had got together again in early 1982 ? Minter was leading on the cards until Sibbo got his shock ko punch in,to end their September '81 bout. Was Tony's victory just one of those lightning strikes moments,or was Alan over the hill ? He looked pretty tasty just three months before, against Mustafa Hamsho.

Don't think Minter looked that good against Hamsho, nowhere near the offensive output he had in the late 70s and seemed to be fighting scared(of cuts) after the Hagler disaster.solid boxing still, but not as effective as he had been.
Sibson undid him with some superb technical punching after early probing work from both fighters. It wasn't really an out of nowhere bomb or uncharacteristic shot that finished it. now, more often than not even that minter will do better than an an early KO, but i doubt he had it in him anymore to let his hands go and counter sharply enough to get to Sibson. Minter was never good enough defensively to fight the back foot, cuter approach he seemed to be trying adopt late on.He could do it for portions of fights to mix things up, but not consistently. |
