Well 6 months before this supposed fight, there was a $200,000 offer for Dempsey to fight Johnson! Also talk of Johnson fighting Wills in an eliminator, which is interesting because this talk seemed to stop after the supposed fight.

This one is quite interesting. It shows that Johnson had his sights set on Dempsey. But also, it is interesting, because Johnson was trying to get the public to support him in his bid to beat Dempsey as he said the public wanted Dempsey beaten.

I was getting quite excited over this article. In fact, up until a few minutes ago, i was getting ready to declare this round by round report as as close to proof as we could find. However, note the disclaimer at the end of the article. I think that pretty much puts the Johnson Dempsey fight into perspective.

Still interesting though, and perhaps an example of where this type of bullshit came from.

Also, good to see they spent time doing in the 1920's the same old shit we do today!

prime johnson couldn't beat a washed up and undersized MW in O'brien

yeah...great logic lubin.
Contrary to the general perception, at the time Dempsey wasn't really loved by the public....and i'm pretty sure that a loud mouthed and ****y guy like Johnson would had made some noise demanding a title fight or even the belt, had he beaten Dempsey in a "private" fight.

Mendoza's doppelganger.
Please explain how O Brien was washed up at 31, [the same age as Johnson,] when he had lost only 2 fights in the last 4 years?
PLease explain how O Brien was an undersized middleweight ,when he scaled 162 1/2lbs ,was 5 ' 10 1/2" tall ,and, was the reigning Light Heavyweight Champion?

The fight was a six round ND. Johnson turned up out of shape and toyed a bit. He definitely dropped rounds he definitely got hit, O'Brien was in a bad way at the end of the fight.

I don't understand and have never understood why some people take such a pivotal view of this fight.

I may be wrong but weren't those fights openly and officially the same situation as Eubank and Otkke fights were unofficially?
