Average abilities lifted by excellent footwork?

Name fighters, active or retired, who never had the best boxing skills or God-given natural abilities, yet excellent footwork lifted their game to a higher level they would've never reached without it?

In modern times I think Hatton's footwork and speed was one of his best attributes. Even Mayweather, the best fighter at the time, was forced to fight the full three minutes of every round because of Hatton's ability to close the distance.

He had the footwork to get in postion to execute his gameplan against the best, but he did not have to other skills to beat the best fighters.

Good point. Hatton did make Floyd fight due to his ability to get close.

Yeah, when you think of what Floyd was able to do again fighters like Gatti and Baldomir. He was able to move wherever he wanted and fire shots of from all angles in those fights, even in the Corrales fight - Hatton had him going backwards all round and made him uncomfortable, even though he was winning the rounds.

Good call. Hatton's quick footwork often gest overlooked but he could close the gap as quick as anyone else in boxing. Too bad he often dove into an opponent with wide open abadonement.

Very nice! For some reason Hatton rarely gets credit for his footwork.

Hattin is a really good call.Without the better than average footwork he would have been lucky to get a title at all.

When he was young though, he was able to get away with mistakes through very good " foot work " ... His footwork was a big factor in his game..
