Povetkin is a better #3 contender than Tubbs, although Tubbs won the championship from Greg Page, who himself was a descent fighter, but I think Pov could hang with any of them.

Adamek is a better #4 than Witherspoon. Witherspoon lost to Tubbs and Pinklon Thomas, and I think Adamek could hang with those guys.

Chagaev & Thomas are even. Thomas was in with better fighters but lost to most of them. Losses to Berbick, Tyson, Holyfield, Bowe and Tommy Morrison
pretty good summation with exception of the following:

Povetkin refused to fight for the title and can't be ranked higher than those who achieved more by actually laying it all on the line against a much more feared champion...

Witherspoon would be champ in 2011, imo. You never saw him fight if you think Ademek is better, his right hand alone was better...

Nah, the Spoon was done as a real contender by 86-87. He was getting lazy and the Smith KO ended his chances at getting back in the mix. Adamek in contrast is on the rise or at least at the apex of his career, in terms of accomplishments he's more on par with 88 Holyfield.

I agree with alot of this post, but the loses in 87 were because champions and top contenders were all in shape and actually fought each other.

Today contenders are happy with one pay check and champions are more interested in their bloated records than real fights.

Good points but, his power is what makes me think he was capable of much more than Adamek, although Adamek is far more consistent at this point in his career...Just my opinion....

BTW, like the 'Smokin' avatar...

Agreed. Povetkin ducked Wlad shamelessly and at least Tubbs did win the title. However, I think head to head Povetkin is a better boxer.

I've not seen Witherspoon fight that I can recall.

2011 is much better at least at heavyweight than 1987. The Tyson prime era was the worst of the worst as far as talent went.

the way i see it is

1-3 is MUCH stronger in 87.
4-7 is stronger in 2011
8-10 is about even.

overall 1987 is better
