...but, no, I don't think people are getting too carried away! Although he's not my cup of tea, you simply can't argue that the guy doesn't look special. People have every right to get excited by his performances. This is not unjustified hype.

It's not my place to argue with someone about how they feel about another human being, but I really don't get this bit about how Jones is supposedly the most "arrogant" fighter in the history of MMA. The kid is extremely confident (probably from dominating much more experienced fighters in camp day in and day out at Jackson's), but he has only made comments about what he thinks he's able to do in the cage. Guess what, he's been able to back all of it up. People have been going after Jones on the internet for his attitude as if running his mouth like Chael Sonnen. Frankly, I find it baffling that Sonnen received mostly praise for disparaging everything and everyone in MMA in the lead up to his loss to Silva. Yet when Jones merely suggests he can submit Shogun (which he kind of did), it's the most offensive interview in the sport's history. Sorry to repeat myself, but I just don't get it.

As an agnostic, I have to stop myself from rolling my eyes when he starts up with the religious talk, but he's not the only fighter who can't shut up about Jesus. Frankly, after living around a bunch of whackjob Christians for most of my life in the Southern US, I've learned to tune that shit out.

Oh and on the original topic of the thread. Yeah, I think that Jones has earned the praise. Nothing is absolute in MMA, and it's quite possible that he'll lose at some point in the near future. However, at the moment, it looks like we're seeing the emergence of another dominant champ.

I was really reserved about buying into the Jones hype because it seems that most of the guys who get a little bit of buzz in MMA end up falling flat on their face, but you have to be in awe of what he's done just since the beginning of the year. He made a strong wrestling in Bader, who has a much better amateur pedigree than his own, look like a child. Then, he went into the title fight and outstruck Shogun standing, which is something that most of the people who picked him to win didn't even expect. The scariest part is that his game is still probably going to improve by leaps and bounds in the next few years.

If Jones doesn't deserve any praise, then who does?

i have always liked jones but i think everyone is getting carried away with all this hype ye he beat shogun but honestly can anyone say shogun was any where near his best he didnt do a single thing in that fight and thats not down to jones bein more superior and more aggressive and a far better fighter, its down to shogun not bein in shape just like the forrest griffen fight it usually takes shogun about 2-3 fights to get back to his best due to all his injurys i reckon if they fought again it would be a different outcome but thats just my opinion,

I see the excessive and/or obsessive praise as well. I think it's easy to like Jones because he comes across as the perfect posterboy. He's like a young Mike Tyson but without the mental and emotional flaws.

In any case I'm not a fan of Jones. I'd love to see A. Silva take him out in what would be Silva's last fight (a superfight) before he retires. That would be a fine way to conclude a career.

I don't think anyone can argue with the idea of him getting a lot of credit. It's the overwhelming part that is in question. No doubt he is a great fighter but some people are already calling him a great champion when he hasn't even defended his title yet. Although he's off to a tremendous start he still has a long way to go before he should get the same kind of respect given to GSP or Silva. Some might say Jones can beat them both in one night which could be true. But let's wait and see him provide proof before we reward him.

I'm sure that there are individuals out there who're making ridiculous statements, but I don't think that you should lump them together with everyone who's high on the kid.

My only point was that he's lived to the expectations that a lot of people had for him after the Bonnar fight, which is where the hype started. I was not on his bandwagon then. I figured that he wouldn't be in serious title contention for at least 2 or 3 more years from now.

Personally I think Jones beats any version of Shogun. Shogun is one of my favourite fighters I was so nervous for him going into this fight but Jones is not a good match up for him. I agree this is a shadow of the Shogun from pride and a fight with that version would be a lot closer but I still say Jones wins and he is yet to even peak.

As for his striking, Shogun still has some of the best striking around, he beat Machida on the feet and at his best when he hasn't gassed and his knee's ok he's still a top striker. Lets not forget how good Diabate and the Reem are standing.

Jones is not going to have it easy, he's in MMA's best division. There are a lot of questions for him. How good is his chin, I reckon it will be good, he ate some big upkicks from Vera but it's still relatively untested. Rashad has the speed to land, what if he fights Rampage coz that dude has huge power. How will he deal with Machida's style if he fights him? How's he going to cope against a guy who has dealt with his unorthodox style before and comes in with a good game plan like Rashad. I believe Jones is going to be a great but he's going to get really tested and if there are flaws they will get shown up.

I clearly see a difference between giving him earned credit and deeming him as the next Jesus. He is a special fighter and there is nothing wrong with having him at the top of the LHW division. I would just like to see him accomplish more before I start hearing ridiculous remarks. Machida is one of my favorite fighters and even I was irritated when people started calling him, "unbeatable." I felt it would jinx his success and it probably did.

I guess I can try and see the bright side of over-hyping a fighter who I'm not a fan of. When he loses, especially in a dominant fashion, it's the greatest feeling in the world.
