That's the thing though, it doesn't take that long to make it 1/100th.

Say there's 25 years a generation. Start with 1981 (Geale's date of birth).

1956-4 Grandparents
1931-8 g-grandparents

So you don't even need to go back 200 years before you have hundreds of DIRECT ancestors. This is why it makes me laugh when Americans say things like 'I can trace my line back to pre revolution days'. Which one of the 500 direct lines is that?!

I'm sure there's some Roman etc. in there too. The thing is though, I don't harp on about my Roman ancestry and carry the Empire's standard with me. That would be mental!

You didn't indicate where in that genealogical line the non-Aboriginal parent entered the equation. Given that Aboriginals were looked down on by the majority of white society, it was frowned upon for a white man or woman to have an Aboriginal partner, so while it is theoretically possible for a white person to have entered Geale's family tree back in 1831, it's highly unlikely.

Yes, he's his real uncle but I don't know what side of his family he's from.

Nor does Geale harp on about his Aboriginal heritage - it was due to Mundine making racist remarks and questioning his Aboriginality and that of his children because Geale has a white wife that it all came up. Geale goes about his business with humility.

Perhaps because you don't live in Australia you can't spot Aboriginal features. To me his father definitely looks part-Aboriginal - his general colouring and facial features look Aboriginal to me.

I find it more unlikely that it was much past that considering the last full Tasmanian aboriginal died a few decades later as an old lady and that by 1930 there were only 3 Tasmanian aboriginal women left!

From an outsiders perspective it just seems weird that Geale would be considered an aboriginal, with him being of mostly European heritage, but I think I understand the Aussie perspective a bit more now. Thanks for taking the time to explain it to me

So you base your nationality on where you were born and raised and not your genealogical bloodline?

I was born in one country, moved to another when I was 2 years old and lived there for 8 years, then moved to another and am now a citizen of that country.

What do you think I consider my background to be? What background would your logic allow me to claim?

No worries.

You've got to take into consideration the fact that compared to Europe, Australia is still a young country as far as whites and indigenous mixing, so it's not as diluted as you think. Add to that the fact the melanonin gene in Aborigines is recessive, meaning the offspring of an Aboriginal and a white parent are likely to have much paler skin than the Aboriginal parent.

It's the same in New Zealand with the Maoris - they're fiercely proud and protective of their culture, so rather than allow it to become diluted and swept under the rug over a period of generations, they acknowledge and celebrate it. See this guy? White as the driven snow but he's got Maori on his mother's side.
