Was this decision considered controversial, what with LaMotta dropping Robinson?

I have heard that this fight was controversial.In Lamotta's autobiographical film, "Raging Bull", the consensus seems to be that Robinson was awarded the decision because "he was going into the army the next day".I'm not quite sure why this would be a deciding factor, but obviously all of the the first five fights between these two were close , hard fought and open to different interpertations.
