Gatti had never done a PPV to that point as far as I know. Even his epic trilogy with Ward didn't draw as much as his fight with Floyd. DLH obviously has a huge fan base and is way over everyone in this aspect but he never came close to these kind of numbers against any of his other opponents. Hopkins I'll admit has no fan base but Vargas, Mosley, trinidad these are all guys with big fan bases and Oscar couldn't even come close to the Mayweather numbers when he fought them. I think that you have to give mayweather some credit for that.

It takes two to really sell a lot, unless you're Mike Tyson in the 90s. He sold a lot against the likes of Bruce Seldon.

Oscar's the king of PPVs and iin a league of his own, but even he needs a reasonably big name in the other corner to do really, really high #s.

His fights with Castilejo, Campas, and Sturm all did in the 350-400K area if I'm not mistaken. Now you put someone else in the other side who has a bigger name like Vargas or Mosley and he does over 900k, or 1.4 mil with Trinidad. Put Mayweather there with an incredible promotional job by HBO with their 24/7 series and it broke all records.

Mayweather will never reach that level, but he's actually done well with PPVs. Gatti had never headlined a PPV before and that sold 360k. Judah had never headlined a PPV before, didn't do much to promote the fight (blaming promotional duties for his loss to Baldomir), and that sold 374k without HBO's usual "Countdown to ......" episode. Baldomir was not much of a name and that sold 325k.
