Actually, it was neither.
It was "I want to (be) fit, and gain some fighting skills"
And I would think (no expert here) the answer would be to do what ever you like best. You will only get out what you put in anyways.
Try a few classes of both and decide.

I would think that MMA/wrestling would be a lot easier to actually do while still going to work the next day. But wrestling with other dudes for fitness to me is just kinda...strange.
Plus... two dudes rolling around on the floor wrestling each other fighting for "real" ...last place I would want to be.

he did ask something to the effect which one for defense, he doesnt know whats around the corner, or something. and the goal is to never get on the ground, but it would suck if you slipped on some glass or spilled beer, ended up on your back, and looked like toney fighting couture.

Again, boxing is a far more brutal sport than today's mma. It's better to watch, and more exciting. Fitness wise, boxing I feel is better. It taxes your body harder than mma no question.

But i still will say combat jj is the most brutal form of punishment, both to yourself and to be able to inflict on your attacker. Take a knee with say 15% of your sparring partners strength on your outer femoral nerve (near a 'charlie horse') then take a full out right hook to the jaw (if you're able to stand from the knee) and tell me which one you can feel tomorrow lol. If you get hit in quite a few pressure points like the outer femoral, youll feel co-lateral pain. Ive been hit so hard there i had to break fall after being spun upside down in mid air!

Seld defense-wise he should train Krav Maga or Sambo
Fitness-wise I think MMA are more demanding
Fun-wise Boxing seems better to me (both to watch or to train)

Personally, after training both MMA and boxing, I find boxing is better fitness wise.

I think both have their good and bad points in a street fight, but probably MMA is a better option if that's mainly what it's for

MMA is probably more rounded skill wise and nice to have just in case you are over matched and/or tackled. Boxing is probably more practical as nobody in their right mind should be going to the ground in a street fight.

Most gyms are hybrid anyway. Just do both.

Different fitness.

Boxing is more sharp explosive endurance. MMA is more explosion slow crushing power. Not saying MMA guys don't have both, but clinging to a Gi or sinking a choke in is slightly different than firing a shot, sinking into the bag 2-4 inches, and rifling it back to your chin. The muscle memory suffers.

I notice the MMA guys load up a lot on shots unless hey are dedicated to cross training Boxing.

but if i were to guess, MMA would be ideal because of ALL AROUND fitness, and in a real life fight, ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN and MMA prepares you for things, such as someone on top of you in a street fight. Boxing does not teach how to get up or how to fight from there for example.

hope this helps.
boxing doesnt train you to grapple on the ground ecause if you have good hands the fight will never go to the ground

mma all the way. You will learn some wrestling, bjj and boxing or muay thai. So when ever you need to defend your self you will be capable standing or on the ground.
mma traiing is more fun as well. You get to mix it up, when i was doing just boxing i ended up getting very bored with the training.

Boxing sparring will probably have the best affect when it comes to fighting, your fitness and punch output will increase dramatically compared to the average joe not to mention you learn how to throw better. Even if you dont want any titles you can still train hard, good quality training goes a long way.

With MMA you can become accredited with martial arts belts, that is something you might want to do. I say do either one but boxing is a great way to train.

Based on your reasons for doing it I would tel you to do MMA, MMA will get you fit and will give you more useful skills for street fighting since most street fights end up with the people involved rolling around on the floor unless someone gets sucker punched.

Boxing is much better than MMA though imo, MMA fighters have no defense when stand up fighting which is why people like it so much I guess.

And personally for your reasons I would just buy a gun and do Crossfit.
