Default 1975 Manila Muhammad Ali vs 1963 MSG Douglas Jones

The nearly second primed Ali vs the tough little persistent plodder.

The Ali of '75 would n't have been quite as fast as his younger version. He would be far more savvy, though.
The two incarnations of Ali here are slightly before prime, and a little bit after prime. The Manila Ali would have had enough of his speed left, and a ton more experience. This would enable him to knock Jones out a fair time before the final round.

The Manila Ali would also outweigh Jones considerably more.

I think it goes the same way as ali v bob foster a few years earlier. Because he would box Doug would be too fast and have sucsess early against the heavier ali but ali would eventualy time jones and put him down a few times as he did with foster. Ali always had more trouble with fast lighter heavyweight like alonzo johnson, billy daniels, cooper, jones, lubbers and spinks than you would expect.

Ali would beat Jones once more, probably by stoppage.

It's a pity that there was n't a rematch between them in 1996 or thereabouts. Muhammad would have relished the chance to beat Jones more convincingly. Only reason, imo, why it never happened is that Jones was no longer in contention.

I believe they had a boxing exhibition, and Ali dominated Jones. A rematch wasn't seen necessary with Jones falling out of the rankings but it may have been made had Jones put up a better fight in the exhibition. The Chuvalo war I think took a lot out of Jones. What a fight that was.

Jones was no Bob Foster.
Ali had trouble with everyone except from the bottom of the bums , or with the shot to death in the dark (as they say).
So people here consider 1975 Ali as a better version than the 1963 Ali , interesting.

Name your long list of fighters Ali had "trouble" with...

Yeah, people would only say that Ali was beating up on a shot Jones, and they wouldn't be very off. It wouldn't prove anything. He toyed with Jones in an exhibition that year actually.

Haven't seen that. But the fight with Folley was tough as hell while it lasted and Jones shipped a lot of punishment in the later rounds against Clay. Put together, those three fights probably took a lot out of him. He looked very good against Folley and Clay, but it came with a price...

I'll put together some highlights. Jones blasted Chuvalo with combinations and showed very good offensive skills, but again his defense was the setback and Chuvalo's greater size and strength overwhelmed him in the end. About every fight was tough for Jones, Harold Jones also gave him a sound thrashing but Jones hung in there for 15 rounds.

The GOAT was a completely different animal after 1963, and the combination of strength and experience he'd acquired by Manila would have been too much for Jones to survive until the final bell. Doug wouldn't have been able to trouble the mature Ali with his power, a key factor in the success Jones was able to achieve in 1963.
