Lewis stated years before the Vitali fight that after unifying the titles he wanted one fight and that was Tyson after that fight he considered a fairwell bout to give to Canada with Johnson, when Johnson pulled out with Injury Lewis gave Vitali his shot....

But the entire time had planned on retirement dont hate on him for that it was his plan for years prior to his fight with Vitali, Vitali did not retire lewis, Lewis beat Vitali and called it a career not becuase he was afraid but because he had unified being the 1st brit to unify the title in a 100 years, he fought and beat every one of his era and of this era (VK)

he did not state anything, he retired when he realized that he can't continue unless he fights a Klitschko again. He planned to fight Kirk Johnson after 1st Vitaly fight.
