Default Canto Vs Vibonchai: Help needed from Spanish speakers/Senor Pepe!!!

If anyone here can take a look at Miguel Canto defending his title against Thai weirdo Facomron Vibonchai (hardly an arduous tast it it? ) and let me know if any information about this Thai bloke is conveyed throughout the fight?!?

Can't find anything about him on the net. NOTHING but an obviously incomplete record (boxrec has him 1-1 going into the Canto fight, which seems implausible even with full knowledge of Thai fighters getting formidable opposition due to already being experienced in Muay Thai. Still, seems really out of place here, guy who uploaded it on youtube reckons it shows the Thais 'real' record a few times throughout but I can't find it) Would really appreciate the help here.

If anyone knows anything about him please let me know. I have him being stopped by Koji Kobayashi on the way, but that isn't really gonna' tell me anything either

They're probably wondering how the hell Canto is struggling with a novice. From what I understand this is the only stand-out moment of an otherwise useless career. One of the reasons why Canto doesn't rate as much of a head to head force with me. Not at the very top, anyway. He excelled against certain fighters, otherwise he was just too physically limited, lacked the offense, versatility, etc. A master of what he did, though. The fact he was able to achieve what he did given those limitations speaks volumes to his pure boxing skills.

Agreed on all points with Canto (quality of course), but as I say, I think there is more to find out about Vibonchai. He certainly doesn't look completely hopeless.

I'll watch it when I get a chance flea. I can tell you this though. He doesn't appear in the Ring ratings prior to the fight althoughmhe is in at 15 in the March 79 ratings which are the 78 ratings. The Ring and boxing illustrated always run 3 months late. He is not included in the Boxing illustrated top 50 flyweights Jan 79 ratings which would be October 78 just prior to the Canto fight. In other words, he came from nowhere.

That is some damn good info Al

What were you trying to say in the bit I've lined? EDIT: 'he was'. So I assume he got that ranking based on his showing here.

Yep, came out of nowhere by the looks of it, still intrigued to find out whether or not a different record is stated/shown for him in the footage.

Just listened to the opening to see if the commentator had any sort of introduction for the fighter in question. He said just a few things: he says that the challenger is unknown, that he trained as a southpaw in a previous training camp against someone with the surname Rivero (I believe), and that his true capability is unknown. Soon after he starts talking about the only 5 historical Thai boxing champions at featherweight. I haven't seen the rest, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't have any further information on this particular individual.

Flea Man,,,,,,,

The Tacomron 'Facomron' Vibonchai 'Challenge'

Checking through some (not all) of the OPBF Boxing Guide.

Facomron Vibonchai, was a 'replacement Challenger' for the WBC Flyweight
Championship bout, on Monday Night, November 20, 1978 - versus Champion Miguel Canto.

The bout, held at Sam Houston Coliseum, also featured the fading former-Champion
Ruben Olivares on the undercard.

Attendance; 7200 (80% of the 9200 capacity)

The 'original opponent' was Thai Flyweight Champion, Danny Pisanchai, who I think was
ranked as the #9 WBC Flyweight. But, Pisanchai was injured in training camp, and could not make the bout.

Danny Pisanchai, had defeated Facomron Vibonchai back in August 1976. They were
both from the same Thai Boxing Club, and were sparring-mates.

In a rush to get someone to fill-in, here came Facomron Vibonchai.

Australian Boxing records show, that Facomron defeated (KO 3) Roger Richens,
on August 28, 1977 in Bangkok. The 'book' states, that the victory over Richens
improved Facomron Vibonchai to 9-1-0 (6 KO's).

Other bouts, in late 1977 and 1978, include '7' more wins over 'non-entities',
with '3' by Knock-out, with all of the bouts at the Super-Flyweight level.

That puts Facomron Vibonchai at 16-1-0 (9 KO's), before his bout with Miguel Canto on
November 20, 1978.

Facomron was rated as the #3 Thai Flyweight in 1979, and in the Top 10 of the
OPBF Flyweights. But, he was not a Top 10 WBC Flyweight at the time of his fight
with Miguel Canto.

It looks like the promoters were trying to 'salvage' the promotion,
and luckily, Facomron Vibonchai had the same boxing manager as Danny Pisanchai.

The WBC and Jose Suliaman, of course approved the 'challenger' as long as the
sanctioning fee's and fighter fee's were paid, in cash.

Facomron Vibonchai, was better than expected, and proved he was a worthy challenger.

Scorecards;
Referee; Zach Clayton (Philadelphia).......145-142 (8-5-2 in Rounds) Miguel Canto
Judge; Mark Tessman (Houston, Texas)...146-141 (9-4-2 in Rounds) Miguel Canto
Judge; Bill Yeager (Houston, Texas)........145-142 (8-5-2 in Rounds) Facomron Vibonchai

Judge Bill Yeager,,,,, never worked another Championship Bout.

Miguel Canto was 56-4-4 (15 KO's). At age 30 1/2, the 5' 0 1/2" 'Maestro' was coming near the end of his
fabulous career. The WBC and Jose Suliaman, suprisingly wanted him to retire.

The 5' 7" 'bean-pole' Facomron Vibonchai, had his best moments in Rounds; 4, 5, 6, 13, 14 and 15.

The announcer, notes that Vibonchai is 'desperate' early in the 15th Round.

The Sam Houston Coliseum, pro Miguel Canto fans, cheer 'Maestro', 'Canto' and 'May-Hee-Co' from the
13th thru the 15th.

Miguel Canto, showed 'very little' in the last '3-Rounds'.

At the 'final bell', the cornermen for Facromon Vibonchai raise their arms, excpecting a 'Decision Victory'.
