After watching the memorable fights with Tyson, I cant help but ask if the Tyson Fights really took that much out of him. During the fight I remember on of the commentators (the fight doctor, i think) saying that it was a fight between the two best heavyweights out there. Meaning Ruddock must have been held in better regard than the likes of Bowe, Holyfield, Douglas, Morrison, Mercer, cooper, etc.
What happened to this guy? It seems after the Tyson fight this guy fell the fuck off! He even invented a trash compactor after losing his fortune in boxing [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3tJPHVCn_0"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3tJPHVCn_0[/ame] |

Well Ruddock lost a brutal slugfest to a Prime Morrison, while very past-prime red-rusty damaged goods himself, so therefore he loses to everyone ever apparently. :/ Or so the haters say.

Donoven "razor" Ruddock began his career as a fairly respectable boxer who used the ring and the jab quite effectively.. After Stopping James Broad in one round sometime around 1987 or 88, his people discovered that he had real heavyweight power.. From that point forth, all of his training emphasis was placed on punching rather than boxing... This strategy got him past an aging Smith and Michael Dokes... Even proved to have some good moments against Tyson... But abandoning his boxing ability rendered him a poor match for Lennox Lewis, leaving him only his powerful left, which was not a particularly useful weopon against Lennox.... Upon losing to Lewis, he had fallen in the ratings, and knew his chance at getting a title shot was nil.... he had made some decent money afterall, and resumed a low profile, low risk career, by basically establishing himself as Canada's best fight, taking only one more BIG fight with Morrison years later....... From what I've read, he lives comfortably now, making money off his endorsed product and still has most of his brains in tact...

You know what's funny? I just picked up this old issue of Boxing Scene detailing this prospect "Razor" Ruddock who has a sharp left hook. It's nuts to see how things went awry.

In an interview on Sky (at the start of the year i think), Lennox Lewis said he still talks to Razor. He said he still goes to the gym and was telling Lewis he was contemplating coming back because he felt he didn't accomplish what he wanted.
Not word for word but along those lines. He did disappear from the world scene quickly, and going by what Mr Magoo said, it sounds like he had lost the hunger. It's good to hear he is living comfortably. |

Wasn't there also some surgical procedure that he had done...that went bad and pretty much finished his career off? This was late...and he did come back for a couple of fights...but he was way past it then.

Ruddock no doubt had all the physical tools to compete with the best of them. His focus too much on punching power may have stunted his growth as a fighter. I also read somehwere (cant remember where) they said that he focused a lot on strength building (probably lifting weights) and after a while he lost all his boxing skills and became to imobile in the ring. Cannot confirm this but I will say if you look atthe Tyson fights he was just trying to land bombs on tyson and not actually following a game plan where he should have used his jab, and punched from the outside! BY then he should have known that a stiff jab, moving around would beat mike tyson. but he went bomb for bomb, he took some hard shots from Tyson in the first fight especially to the body. I was wondering why this guy was still up!

I thought it went rather well for Razor.
A man who lost to David Jaco, went on to have two huge money fights. That led to some considering he would come out on top in the supposed four man tournament that also included the undefeated fighters Bowe, Holyfield and Lewis. He then made good money on a comeback and retired and seemingly was smart with his money. Ruddock, as far as the sport goes, overachieved. |

Went as far as his ability could take him. Huge puncher and very durable in the Tyson fights, but wasn't likely to deal with a more skilled boxer like Lewis or even Morrison.
As others noted, he has done well by boxing and boxing did well by him. Loved watching him fight -- true warrior mentality and wasn't one to ever back down. |
