Sanders is a legitimate threat for any vulnerable big man as he showed against Wladimir. Carnera has advantages in strength and conditioning, he would definitely have to make it a rough fight in the clinches to prevent Sanders from scoring with counters at long range.

Carnera can't be counted out even if he gets hurt and knocked down, because he had the strength to survive by clinching and the heart to last so Sanders would have to finish him off skillfully and not just swing with wild punches in hopes of getting him out of there. He was not a threat late in a fight unlike Max Baer or Joe Louis.

I would go with Carnera for a couple of reasons.

Carnera was prety consitent and generaly an overachiever. Sanders was not. In short, Carnera is far more likley to bring his A game, which is a lot better than Sanders B game.

If they both bring their A game, I see Carnera getting dropped and hurt, but it is highly likley that he would survive the bad patch to take control of the fight. You generaly had to put Carnera down more than once to get him out of there. If I have to put money down, then I think that Carnera would take control of the fight late.

The 15 round distance especially favours Carnera if he gets past the early rounds.

Sanders bombs him out. I think the speed will be the difference

Sanders will do what he did to Wlad...all the ingredients are there..Carnera would outbox him for 2 rounds then the roof would fall in on him.

I agree Red......but I think Carnera would have survived at least until the later rounds......

Sanders only scored 1 KO after the 4th round over 14-10 Marshall Tillman. 28 of his 31 KO's were scored in 3 rounds or less. Basically I wouldn't count on him to pull off a late round KO win. Not that he necessarily needs to in this match-up.

Well, that does make sense...after all he hung in there with Baer till round 11...and Louis till 8. I;ll go with that...maybe he last till 10...but like it's been said, Primo's chances would have gotten better the longer it lasted, especially since Sanders wasn't blessed with stamina.

Yep, and like Great A said.....The 15 round distance especially favours Carnera....

Well, upon reconsidering, I think it would have been possible for Primo to survive beyond the round that Wlad fell in...but there we go with these hypothetical matchups...do we cherry pick what version of a given fighter to make the matchup with? The very best of Sanders (the Wlad fight) or a sloppier, more out of shape, less focused version? Same with Carnera..in other words the idea is supposed to be the best version of a given fighter vs the best of another fighter...unless you state so beforehand, like peak Carnera..likely the fight he ko'ed Sharkey in vs the Sanders from the Wlad fight, whether he attained that level again notwithstanding.

Whenever you see a Buster Douglas vs (?) matchup, you aren't interested in any other version of Buster except for that Feb date in japan vs Tyson..when was he ever at that level before or after...never...and who cares? You're only interested in that one time version of Buster. It's the same with any matchup involving Corrie Sanders...
