Just Robinson.

I've always thought Gavilan would be the best 'non-puncher' (although he was certainly a spiteful and underrated hitter but you'll see what I mean when I finish this sentence) to beat Hearns at the weight.

No one stops Gavilan. No one. Ever.

I really don't rate Lewis. I might be wrong, but from what I've ever managed to find out about him, thee best thing he did (other than being a fearless warrior who scaled all sorts of weight) is being on the losing end of a series with (admittedly legendary) Jack Britton.

What other wins of note did he have?

Gavilan would batter him.

The difference is that I just don't think he'd be nullifed up close. He was very strong for a WW and as far as i can see trades heavy artillery up close. If you think Gavilan could smother and neutralize him, sure, I just think the middle and close game would be a lot for Gavilan to handle.

I think Gavilan actually matches up well with Hearns. A great chin to take the shots. Great stamina to up the work rate. Speed to actually catch Hearns. The height and strength to compete, and pretty good boxing skills.

Very hard to say without extensive research.

I think you can make the case for his being #2 for sure.

I'd pick Burley to beat him.

I don't give too many WW boxers a good chance against Hearns. His speed, reach, power and boxing skills are just too big of an obstacle to overcome even if you have superior boxing skills (ask Leonard and Benitez). You have to be willing to go inside, be able to take Tommy's cannon on the chin and have enough of your own firepower to exploit his shaky chin.

Leonard had that firepower(though I STILL think Tommy would have taken him if he'd just kept boxing!). So did the WW Burley. Guys like Benitez, Gavilan, Holman Williams, etc. did not. Hearns can't take Gavilan out, but his concussive power and monstrous wingspan can keep the Kid honest and at bay. He can dance around and make Gavilan chase him. When Gavilan caught up Tommy would have a nasty surprise for him, whereas Gavilan would only have his mediocre power to rely on.

Gavilan has his moments, but Hearns takes a UD.

I agree. Gavilan was better at that style of fighting than Leonard, though, so I think he'd make it closer, but in the end would lose a UD.

KG was such a tough bastard though, and clever. I think he would out-land Hearns, for whatever that is worth.

If Gavin Rees fought Gavilan then Gavilans fifty two handblocks would be useless
