The St Paul's club in Waterford claimed the first Elite title of the IABA's Centenary year courtesy of Lynne McEnery's light-flyweight win over Maeve Clarke at the National Stadium in Dublin tonight.

Six Women's Elite finals were decided this evening and McEnery ensured she finished on the winners podium after earning an impressive 14-1 decision.

European Youth silver medalist Katie Rowland took home the second title of the night at the expense of the brave Ceire Smith in the flyweight class.

Both boxers were tied at 1-1 after the first minute, but Rowland took the round 3-1 - and the second 7-2, landing some precision rights in the process. However, Smith came storming back in the third and forced the Geesala prospect into the standing count en route to reducing the deficit to 9-6.

Smith, who never stopped coming forward, scored the first point of the fourth, but Rowland responded superbly with another two points of her own to claim victory by a four point margin.

Meanwhile, the lead changed hand twice as Chris Phelan, who is making his Senior debut this season, ousted 2009 Senior champ Declan Geraghty in the first of the Elite Men's semi-finals.

Geraghty took the first round 2-1 , but Phelan picked off four points, one via a sweeping left hook, to take the second 5-3. The 18-year-old Ryston man also registered three points as opposed to Geraghty's one in the third and final frame.

Famed RTE boxing commentator Jimmy Magee said: "That was a top class performance from young Chris Phelan against a very good opponent, very impressive."

The third female final of the evening went to Holy Family BC ace Michaela Walsh over Dervla Duffy in an end-to-end 57Kg duel.

The first, second and third rounds of this see-saw clash finished at 2-2,3-3 and 8-8 as both boxers took it in turns to command the lead before Walsh won the final round 4-2 to claim the featherweight crown from another top class female final.

Former champ Shane Cox went in at the bell 2-1 up against 2010 featherweight champion Tyrone McCullagh, but the European Championships bronze medalist found the target twice in frame two to edge 3-2 in front at the bell for the end of the second.

McCullagh, now boxing out of the Holy Family club, sealed the win with a right to the body and four further shots to the head in the third. McCullagh will now meet John Joe Nevin in next Friday's final.

Meanwhile, David Oliver Joyce powered his way into the lightweight decider after Ciaran Bates was retired by his corner at the end of the first round.

Joyce, who reached last year final against his own St Michael's team-mate Eric Donovan - who was beaten by Bates St Mary's BC Dublin team-mate Michael McDonagh last night - was 6-1 up when Bates was withdrawn.

In the light-welterweight Women's Elite final, Kelly Harrington edged out the gallant challenge of Alanna Murphy to win a close contest 5-3.

Philip Sutcliffe, the 2009 64Kg champion, stopped Anthony Upton in round one. Upton went down under a combination in a neutral corner and the ref stopped the bout.

Laoise Traynor also left the National Stadium with a belt around her waist, but it was a close call for the Bray BC prospect as Limerick's Jessie Lyons came storming back to level the bout at 5-5 in the four and final round. However, Traynor, a Gardai, found the winning score with a right inside the last 40 seconds.

Jamie Dowling also fought the law and the law won as he lost out 6-1 to the impressive Adam Nolan, also a Gardai, who made it back-to-back wins for the Bray BC on the night.

Meantime, Jason Quigley, the 2009 European Youth champ, will meet defending champion Darren O'Neill in a repeat of the 2010 final following an 11-4 verdict over Chris Blaney. Quigley did most of his good work in the second round of this encounter and always looked the more likely to advance on the night.

Looking back on the 2010 final with European Senior Championships silver medalist O'Neill, Quigley said that he learnt a lot from that middleweight decider.

"I am stronger and more experienced this year - last year I was an unknown. This year I know what it is all about and I am prepared to do the business. You learn more from a defeat than from a win."

In the final female final of the evening, Leanne McAree-Murphy came from behind to claim the 81Kg title following a 7-4 win over Lauragh O'Neill.

In the battle of the AIBA World Youth medalists, Joe Ward, who claimed gold at the 2010 World Youths, beat Davey Joe Joyce, who claimed bronze at the 2008 World Youths.

Ward opened the scoring mid-way through the first round with a right off a combination and landed another stinging left seconds later. Ward extended that advantage by another four points in the second to leave Joyce with a mountain to climb in the third.

The St Michael's Athy man was awarded two points after Ward received a public warning for pulling down his head in the third, but then ceded those two points after receiving a public warning of his own for dropping his head.

Ward will now meet Ken Egan, who is aiming for 11 in a row, in next Friday's light-heavyweight final following this 8-2 win.

I have sparred Kenny in High Performance. I believe this will be a good fight a very exciting fight. I believe there will not be a lot in and I believe I can come out on the right side," said Ward, looking ahead to next Friday's final.

Galway's Patrick Corcoran will meet defending champ Con Sheehan - the 2009 EU champ, who is aiming for his fourth title on the trot at the Elite Championships - in next Friday's 91Kg final after a 10-8 decision over John Sweeney.

And defending super-bantamweight champ and 2007 EU silver medalist Cathal McMonagle awaits Kenneth Okungbowa after the Athlone BC man came from being 2-0 down to stop Thomas Sheehan in the second.

Hopefully he signs with Gary Shaw or someone like Lou DiBella who could put him on some cards with Lee and build his profile a bit.
