Post little signs you notice that MMA is slowly beginning to replace boxing.

I'll start. Yesterday I was watching a New Zealand sports/comedy show. They have a feature called the "Weekend in Three And A Half Minutes" which is basically highlights with a smartassed commentary over the top.

Mir-Nog and Jones-Machida were both featured in the segment.

Khan-Peterson was not.

After the segment, there was some discussion about the brutality, and both announcers noted that even though many viewers would have found the footage distateful, there was a significant viewer base who was interested in MMA highlights and events. They closed by talking briefly about Lesnar-Overeem, describing it as "two enormous monsters with aggressive styles and questionable chins, so that's gonna be awesome."

A couple of weeks ago they also talked about Shogun-Hendo. They haven't talked about any boxing match since Wlad-Haye.


What little signs do YOU notice on the Web or on TV or in real life that, these days, if there's a reference to a combat sport, it'll more likely be MMA than boxing?

To be fair, what country are you from? Because in the United States, while MMA is growing in popularity and taking some of boxing's territory in spots, I can't say it's replacing it at all. Same in Latin America (especially since Marquez-Pacquiao 3 was the most viewed fight in the country's entire history.)

I'm in New Zealand, but I notice it a lot in US media as well. I can't speak for the Latin community, but I notice things here and there in the US. Here's another one. From a main page article on cracked.com.

my mates arent real hard core fight fans. they have a passing interest when a big fight is on but the last fight they paid for was tyson vs golota. having said that though they have paid for the the last 3 ufc's

I'd be baffled if it replaces boxing in Europe. MMA is shit. People who take MMA classes only do so because they've been bullied all of their lives. 'Elite' MMA fighters probably still do get bullied, by boxers. See James Toney clowning Ken Shamrock

In South-west England i'd say a lot more kids are getting into MMA than boxing. Where i live even the boxing gyms are bringing in MMA classes just to keep the money flowing...

I saw an interview with Lorenzo Fertitta where he stated that many of his teenaged son's friends said they have never even seen a boxing match. Live or on television. He obviously has a vested interest and is biased but I don't think he lying. I personally don't view boxing and mma as being mutually exclusive. I enjoy both sports immensely. A different type of combat sure. Many boxing enthusiasts find it distateful and unseemly that in mma you can follow a downed opponent to the canvas and hit him while he is turtling up on the floor. Like I said: two different sports. Boxing is not marketed correctly anymore. People are confused and don't know who all the different champs are let alone the organizations. There are repeated horrible decisions like the latest monstrosity in the Robert Helenuis vs Derek Chisora bout. Chisora, an englishman and heavy underdog who was thought to be nothing more than cannon fodder, actually ended up winning about eight of the scheduled twelve rounds. The fight was in Helenuis' background so guess what happened? Yup, the crooked judges ruled in favor of the man they paid off to protect - Helenuis. MMA fans tend to be less jingoistic and root for their favorite fighters regardless of orgins. Boxing is still very ethnocentric where you see the flags in the crowd of whatever country the guy they are rooting for hails from. Most mma fans just root for their favorite guys regardless of country. So in that sense mma is more modern and fresh than the stale old ethnic rivalries of yesterday boxing fosters.
